Biblical Studies Press, 2005) ### The Cutting of the Covenant [[#Verse 01.]] After these things the Lord’s message came to Abram in a vision: “Fear not, Abram! I am your shield and the one who will reward you in great abundance.” [[#Verse 02.]] But Abram said, “O Sovereign Lord, what will you give me since I continue to be childless, and my heir is Eliezer of Damascus?”  [[#Verse 03.]] Abram added, “Since you have not given me a descendant, then look, one born in my house will be my heir!” [[#Verse 04.]] But look, the Lord’s message came to him: “This man will not be your heir, but instead a son who comes from your own body will be your heir.”  [[#Verse 05.]] The Lord took him outside and said, “Gaze into the sky and count the stars—if you are able to count them!” Then he said to him, “So will your descendants be.” [[#Verse 06.]] Abram believed the Lord, and the Lord credited it as righteousness to him. [[#Verse 07.]] The Lord said to him, “I am the Lord who brought you out from Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land to possess.”  [[#Verse 08.]] But Abram said, “O Sovereign Lord, by what can I know that I am to possess it?” [[#Verse 09.]] The Lord said to him, “Take for me a heifer, a goat, and a ram, each three years old, along with a dove and a young pigeon.”  [[#Verse 10.]] So Abram took all these for him and then cut them in two and placed each half opposite the other, but he did not cut the birds in half.  [[#Verse 11.]] When birds of prey came down on the carcasses, Abram drove them away. [[#Verse 12.]] When the sun went down, Abram fell sound asleep, and great terror overwhelmed him.  [[#Verse 13.]] Then the Lord said to Abram, “Know for certain that your descendants will be strangers in a foreign country. They will be enslaved and oppressed for 400 years.  [[#Verse 14.]] But I will execute judgment on the nation that they will serve. Afterward they will come out with many possessions.  [[#Verse 15.]] But as for you, you will go to your ancestors in peace and be buried at a good old age.  [[#Verse 16.]] In the fourth generation your descendants will return here, for the sin of the Amorites has not yet reached its limit.” [[#Verse 17.]] When the sun had gone down and it was dark, a smoking firepot with a flaming torch passed between the animal parts.  [[#Verse 18.]] That day the Lord made a covenant with Abram: “To your descendants I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the Euphrates River—  [[#Verse 19.]] the land of the Kenites, Kenizzites, Kadmonites,  [[#Verse 20.]] Hittites, Perizzites, Rephaites,  [[#Verse 21]] Amorites, Canaanites, Girgashites, and Jebusites.” ## ==📖 Verse-by-Verse Commentary== ###### Verse 1. - It can be easy to forget Abraham is all alone in this new place and he has now made enemies because of the previous chapter. God is reminding Abraham that he is not alone. God is with him. ###### Verse 9. - This was a common way to make a covenant during the time. The animals would be divided and the two making the covenant would pass through. The covenant meant that, if either of the two parties violated the terms of the covenant, may what happened to the animals happened to them. God was giving Abraham certainty in a way he would understand. ###### Verse 13. - This could have been the promise the nation of Israel would have held on to during their slavery in Egypt. ###### Overall. ###### Verse 01. ###### Verse 02. ###### Verse 03. ###### Verse 04. ###### Verse 05. ###### Verse 06. ###### Verse 07. ###### Verse 08. ###### Verse 09. ###### Verse 10. ###### Verse 11. ###### Verse 12. ###### Verse 13. ###### Verse 14. ###### Verse 15. ###### Verse 16. ###### Verse 17. ###### Verse 18. ###### Verse 19. ###### Verse 20. ###### Verse 21. ## 🤔 Interesting Facts / Historical and Cultural Insights - coming soon. %% PRIVATE NOTES (only I see this) Write down things that are not straight from commentary but interesting facts that ground the text in history. %% ## 🧠 Chapter Summary - coming soon. %% PRIVATE NOTES (only I see this) Write a short paragraph (3–5 sentences) summarizing what happens in this chapter. - What is the main event or teaching? - How does this chapter fit the book’s overall story? - What stands out immediately?
