## š Scripture Text (NET)
(The NET Bible: New English Translation. Biblical Studies Press, 2005)
#### A Son Is Promised to Sarah
[[#Verse 01.]] TheĀ LordĀ appeared again to Abraham near the oak grove belonging to Mamre. One day Abraham was sitting at the entrance to his tent during the hottest part of the day.Ā
[[#Verse 02.]]Ā He looked up and noticed three men standing nearby. When he saw them, he ran to meet them and welcomed them, bowing low to the ground.
[[#Verse 03.]]Ā āMy lord,ā he said, āif it pleases you, stop here for a while.Ā
[[#Verse 04.]]Ā Rest in the shade of this tree while water is brought to wash your feet.
[[#Verse 05.]]Ā And since youāve honored your servant with this visit, let me prepare some food to refresh you before you continue on your journey.ā āAll right,ā they said. āDo as you have said.ā
[[#Verse 06.]]Ā So Abraham ran back to the tent and said to Sarah, āHurry! Get three large measures of your best flour, knead it into dough, and bake some bread.āĀ
[[#Verse 07.]]Ā Then Abraham ran out to the herd and chose a tender calf and gave it to his servant, who quickly prepared it.Ā
[[#Verse 08.]]Ā When the food was ready, Abraham took some yogurt and milk and the roasted meat, and he served it to the men. As they ate, Abraham waited on them in the shade of the trees.
[[#Verse 09.]]Ā āWhere is Sarah, your wife?ā the visitors asked. āSheās inside the tent,ā Abraham replied.
[[#Verse 10.]]Ā Then one of them said, āI will return to you about this time next year, and your wife, Sarah, will have a son!ā Sarah was listening to this conversation from the tent.Ā
[[#Verse 11.]]Ā Abraham and Sarah were both very old by this time, and Sarah was long past the age of having children.Ā
[[#Verse 12.]]Ā So she laughed silently to herself and said, āHow could a worn-out woman like me enjoy such pleasure, especially when my masterāmy husbandāis also so old?ā
[[#Verse 13.]]Ā Then theĀ LordĀ said to Abraham, āWhy did Sarah laugh? Why did she say, āCan an old woman like me have a baby?āĀ
[[#Verse 14.]]Ā Is anything too hard for theĀ Lord? I will return about this time next year, and Sarah will have a son.ā
[[#Verse 15.]]Ā Sarah was afraid, so she denied it, saying, āI didnāt laugh.ā But theĀ LordĀ said, āNo, you did laugh.ā
#### Abraham Intercedes for Sodom
#intercession
[[#Verse 16.]]Ā Then the men got up from their meal and looked out toward Sodom. As they left, Abraham went with them to send them on their way.
[[#Verse 17.]]Ā āShould I hide my plan from Abraham?ā theĀ LordĀ asked.Ā
[[#Verse 18.]]Ā āFor Abraham will certainly become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth will be blessed through him.Ā
[[#Verse 19.]]Ā I have singled him out so that he will direct his sons and their families to keep the way of theĀ LordĀ by doing what is right and just. Then I will do for Abraham all that I have promised.ā
[[#Verse 20.]]Ā So theĀ LordĀ told Abraham, āI have heard a great outcry from Sodom and Gomorrah, because their sin is so flagrant.Ā
[[#Verse 21.]]Ā I am going down to see if their actions are as wicked as I have heard. If not, I want to know.ā
[[#Verse 22.]]Ā The other men turned and headed toward Sodom, but theĀ LordĀ remained with Abraham.Ā
[[#Verse 23.]]Ā Abraham approached him and said, āWill you sweep away both the righteous and the wicked?Ā
[[#Verse 24.]]Ā Suppose you find fifty righteous people living there in the cityāwill you still sweep it away and not spare it for their sakes?Ā
[[#Verse 25.]]Ā Surely you wouldnāt do such a thing, destroying the righteous along with the wicked. Why, you would be treating the righteous and the wicked exactly the same! Surely you wouldnāt do that! Should not the Judge of all the earth do what is right?ā
[[#Verse 26.]]Ā And theĀ LordĀ replied, āIf I find fifty righteous people in Sodom, I will spare the entire city for their sake.ā
[[#Verse 27.]]Ā Then Abraham spoke again. āSince I have begun, let me speak further to my Lord, even though I am but dust and ashes.Ā
[[#Verse 28.]]Ā Suppose there are only forty-five righteous people rather than fifty? Will you destroy the whole city for lack of five?ā And theĀ LordĀ said, āI will not destroy it if I find forty-five righteous people there.ā
[[#Verse 29.]]Ā Then Abraham pressed his request further. āSuppose there are only forty?" And theĀ LordĀ replied, āI will not destroy it for the sake of the forty.ā
[[#Verse 30.]]Ā āPlease donāt be angry, my Lord,ā Abraham pleaded. āLet me speakāsuppose only thirty righteous people are found?ā And theĀ LordĀ replied, āI will not destroy it if I find thirty.ā
[[#Verse 31.]]Ā Then Abraham said, āSince I have dared to speak to the Lord, let me continueāsuppose there are only twenty?ā And theĀ LordĀ replied, āThen I will not destroy it for the sake of the twenty.ā
[[#Verse 32.]]Ā Finally, Abraham said, āLord, please donāt be angry with me if I speak one more time. Suppose only ten are found there?ā And theĀ LordĀ replied, āThen I will not destroy it for the sake of the ten.ā
[[#Verse 33.]]Ā When theĀ LordĀ had finished his conversation with Abraham, he went on his way, and Abraham returned to his tent.
