## š Scripture Text (NET)
### David Is Anointed King Over Israel
[[#Verse 01.]]Ā All the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron saying, āLook, we are your very flesh and blood!Ā
[[#Verse 02.]]Ā In the past, when Saul was our king, you were the real leader in Israel.Ā TheĀ LordĀ said to you, āYou will shepherd my people Israel; you will rule over Israel.āā
[[#Verse 03.]]Ā When all the leadersĀ of Israel came to the king at Hebron, King David made an agreement with themĀ in Hebron before theĀ Lord. They designatedĀ David as king over Israel.
[[#Verse 04.]]Ā David was thirty years old when he began to reign and he reigned for forty years.
[[#Verse 05.]]Ā In Hebron he reigned over Judah for seven years and six months, and in Jerusalem he reigned for thirty-three years over all Israel and Judah.
### David Occupies Jerusalem
[[#Verse 06.]]Ā Then the king and his men advanced to Jerusalem against the Jebusites who lived in the land. The JebusitesĀ said to David, āYou cannot invade this place! Even the blind and the lame will turn you back, saying, āDavid cannot invade this place!āā
[[#Verse 07.]]Ā But David captured the fortress of Zion (that is, the City of David).Ā
[[#Verse 08.]]Ā David said on that day, āWhoever attacks the Jebusites must approach the ālameā and the āblindā who are Davidās enemiesĀ by going through the water tunnel.āĀ For this reason it is said, āThe blind and the lame cannot enter the palace.ā
[[#Verse 09.]]Ā So David lived in the fortress and called it the City of David. David built all around it, from the terrace inwards.Ā
[[#Verse 10.]]Ā Davidās power grew steadily, for theĀ LordĀ GodĀ of Heavenās ArmiesĀ was with him.
[[#Verse 11.]]Ā King Hiram of Tyre sent messengers to David, along with cedar logs, carpenters, and stonemasons. They built a palaceĀ for David.Ā
[[#Verse 12.]]Ā David realized that theĀ LordĀ had established him as king over Israel and that he had elevated his kingdom for the sake of his people Israel.Ā
[[#Verse 13.]]Ā David married more concubines and wives from Jerusalem after he arrived from Hebron. Even more sons and daughters were born to David.Ā
[[#Verse 14.]]Ā These are the names of children born to him in Jerusalem: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon,
[[#Verse 15.]]Ā Ibhar, Elishua, Nepheg, Japhia,Ā
[[#Verse 16.]]Ā Elishama, Eliada, and Eliphelet.
### Conflict with the Philistines
[[#Verse 17.]]Ā When the Philistines heard that David had been designatedĀ king over Israel, they allĀ went up to search for David. When David heard about it, he went down to the fortress.Ā
[[#Verse 18.]]Ā Now the Philistines had arrived and spread out in the valley of Rephaim.Ā
[[#Verse 19.]]Ā So David asked theĀ Lord, āShould I march up against the Philistines? Will you hand them over to me?ā TheĀ LordĀ said to David, āMarch up, for I will indeedĀ hand the Philistines over to you.ā [^1]
[[#Verse 20.]]Ā So David marched against Baal Perazim and defeated them there. Then he said, āTheĀ LordĀ has burst out against my enemies like water bursts out.ā So he called the name of that place Baal Perazim.Ā
[[#Verse 21.]]Ā The PhilistinesĀ abandoned their idolsĀ there, and David and his men picked them up.
[[#Verse 22.]]Ā The Philistines again came up and spread out in the valley of Rephaim.
[[#Verse 23.]]Ā So David asked theĀ LordĀ what he should do.Ā This timeĀ theĀ LordĀ said to him, āDonāt march straight up. Instead, circle around behind them and come against them opposite the trees.Ā
[[#Verse 24.]]Ā When you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the trees, act decisively. For at that moment theĀ LordĀ is going before you to strike down the armyĀ of the Philistines.āĀ
[[#Verse 25]]Ā David did just as theĀ LordĀ commanded him, and he struck down the Philistines from Gibeon all the way to Gezer.
