### Nathan the Prophet Confronts David
[[#Verse 01.]]Ā So theĀ LordĀ sent NathanĀ to David. When he came to David,Ā NathanĀ said,Ā āThere were two men in a certain city, one rich and the other poor.Ā
[[#Verse 02.]]Ā The rich man had a great many flocks and herds.Ā
[[#Verse 03.]]Ā But the poor man had nothing except for a little lamb he had acquired. He raised it, and it grew up alongside him and his children.Ā It used toĀ eat his food,Ā drink from his cup, and sleep in his arms.Ā It was just like a daughter to him.
[[#Verse 04.]]Ā āWhen a traveler arrived at the rich manās home,Ā he did not want to use one of his own sheep or cattle to feedĀ the traveler who had come to visit him.Ā Instead, he took the poor manās lamb and cookedĀ it for the man who had come to visit him.ā
[[#Verse 05.]]Ā Then David became very angry at this man. He said to Nathan, āAs surely as theĀ LordĀ lives, the man who did this deserves to die!Ā
[[#Verse 06.]]Ā Because he committed this cold-hearted crime, he must pay for the lamb four times over!ā
[[#Verse 07.]]Ā Nathan said to David, āYou are that man! This is what theĀ LordĀ God of Israel has said: āI choseĀ you to be king over Israel and I rescued you from the hand of Saul.Ā
[[#Verse 08.]]Ā I gave you your masterās house, and put your masterās wives into your arms.Ā I also gave you the house of Israel and Judah. And if all that somehow seems insignificant, I would have given you so much more as well!Ā
[[#Verse 09.]]Ā Why have you shown contempt for theĀ Lordās decreesĀ by doing evil in myĀ sight? You have struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword and you have taken his wife to be your own wife! You have killed him with the sword of the Ammonites.Ā
[[#Verse 10.]]Ā So now the sword will never depart from your house. For you have despised me by taking the wife of Uriah the Hittite as your own!āĀ
[[#Verse 11.]]Ā This is what theĀ LordĀ has said: āI am about to bring disaster on youĀ from inside your own household!Ā Right before your eyes I will take your wives and hand them over to your companion.Ā He will go to bed withĀ your wives in broad daylight!Ā
[[#Verse 12.]]Ā Although you have acted in secret, I will do this thing before all Israel, and in broad daylight.āā
[[#Verse 13.]]Ā Then David exclaimed to Nathan, āI have sinned against theĀ Lord!ā Nathan replied to David, āYes, and theĀ LordĀ has forgivenĀ your sin. You are not going to die.Ā
[[#Verse 14.]]Ā Nonetheless, because you have treated theĀ LordĀ with such contemptĀ in this matter, the son who has been born to you will certainly die.ā
[[#Verse 15.]]Ā Then Nathan went to his home. TheĀ LordĀ struck the child that Uriahās wife had borne to David, and the child became very ill.Ā
[[#Verse 16.]]Ā Then David prayed toĀ God for the child and fasted.Ā He would evenĀ go and spend the night lying on the ground.Ā
[[#Verse 17.]]Ā The elders of his house stood over him and tried to lift him from the ground, but he was unwilling, and refused to eat food with them.
[[#Verse 18.]]Ā On the seventh day the child died. But the servants of David were afraid to inform him that the child had died, for they said, āWhile the child was still alive he would not listen to usĀ when we spoke to him. How can we tell him that the child is dead? He will do himself harm!ā
[[#Verse 19.]]Ā When David saw that his servants were whispering to one another, heĀ realized that the child was dead. So David asked his servants, āIs the child dead?ā They replied, āYes, heās dead.āĀ
[[#Verse 20.]]Ā So David got up from the ground, bathed, put on oil, and changed his clothes. He went to the house of theĀ LordĀ and worshiped. Then, when he entered his palace, he requested that food be brought to him, and he ate.
[[#Verse 21.]]Ā His servants said to him, āWhat is this that you have done? WhileĀ the child was still alive, you fasted and wept. Once the child was dead you got up and ate food!āĀ
[[#Verse 22.]]Ā He replied, āWhile the child was still alive, I fasted and wept because I thought,Ā āPerhapsĀ theĀ LordĀ will show pity and the child will live.āĀ
[[#Verse 23.]]Ā But now he is dead. Why should I fast? Am I able to bring him back at this point? I will go to him, but he cannot return to me!ā
[[#Verse 24.]]Ā So David comforted his wife Bathsheba. He came to herĀ and went to bed with her.Ā Later she gave birth to a son, and DavidĀ named him Solomon. Now theĀ LordĀ loved the childĀ
[[#Verse 25.]]Ā and sent word through Nathan the prophet that he should be named JedidiahĀ for theĀ Lordās sake.
### Davidās Forces Defeat the Ammonites
[[#Verse 26.]]Ā Ā So Joab fought against Rabbah of the Ammonites and captured the royal city.
[[#Verse 27.]]Ā Joab then sent messengers to David, saying, āI have fought against Rabbah and have captured the water supply of the city.Ā
[[#Verse 28.]]Ā So now assemble the rest of the armyĀ and besiege the city and capture it. Otherwise I will capture the city and it will be named for me.ā
[[#Verse 29.]]Ā So David assembled all the army and went to Rabbah and fought against it and captured it.Ā
[[#Verse 30.]]Ā He took the crown of their kingĀ from his headāit was gold, weighed about seventy-five pounds,Ā and held a precious stoneāand it was placed on Davidās head. He also took from the city a great deal of plunder.Ā
[[#Verse 31.]]Ā He removedĀ the people who were in it and made them labor with saws, iron picks, and iron axes, putting them to workĀ at the brick kiln. This was his policyĀ with all the Ammonite cities. Then David and all the army returned to Jerusalem.
