Biblical Studies Press, 2005) ### David Displeases the Lord by Taking a Census [[#Verse 01.]] TheĀ Lord’s anger again raged against Israel, and he incited David against them, saying, ā€œGo count Israel and Judah.ā€Ā  [[#Verse 02.]]Ā The king told Joab, the general in command of his army, ā€œGo through all the tribes of Israel from Dan to Beer Sheba and muster the army, so I may know the size of the army.ā€ [[#Verse 03.]]Ā Joab replied to the king, ā€œMay theĀ LordĀ your God make the army a hundred times larger right before the eyes of my lord the king! But why does my master the king want to do this?ā€ [[#Verse 04.]]Ā But the king’s edict stood, despite the objections ofĀ Joab and the leaders of the army. So Joab and the leaders of the army left the king’s presence in order to muster the Israelite army. [[#Verse 05.]]Ā They crossed the Jordan and camped at Aroer, on the south side of the city, atĀ the wadi of Gad, near Jazer.Ā  [[#Verse 06.]]Ā Then they went on to Gilead and to the region of Tahtim Hodshi, coming to Dan Jaan and on around to Sidon.Ā  [[#Verse 07.]]Ā Then they went to the fortress of Tyre and all the cities of the Hivites and the Canaanites. Then they went on to the Negev of Judah, to Beer Sheba.Ā  [[#Verse 08.]]Ā They went through all the land and after nine months and twenty days came back to Jerusalem. [[#Verse 09.]]Ā Joab reported the number of warriorsĀ to the king. In Israel there were 800,000 sword-wielding warriors, and in Judah there were 500,000 soldiers. [[#Verse 10.]]Ā David felt guiltyĀ after he had numbered the army. David said to theĀ Lord, ā€œI have sinned greatly by doing this! Now, OĀ Lord, please remove the guilt of your servant, for I have acted very foolishly.ā€ [[#Verse 11.]]Ā When David got up the next morning, theĀ Lord’s message had already come to the prophet Gad, David’s seer:Ā  [[#Verse 12.]]Ā ā€œGo, tell David, ā€˜This is what theĀ LordĀ has said: I am offering you three forms of judgment. Pick one of them and I will carry it out against you.ā€™ā€ [[#Verse 13.]] Gad went to David and told him, ā€œShall sevenĀ years of famine come upon your land? Or shall you flee for three months from your enemies with them in hot pursuit? Or shall there be three days of plague in your land? Now decideĀ what I should tell the one who sent me.ā€Ā  [[#Verse 14.]]Ā David said to Gad, ā€œI am very upset! I prefer that we be attacked by theĀ Lord, for his mercy is great; I do not want to be attacked by human hands!ā€ [[#Verse 15.]]Ā So theĀ LordĀ sent a plague through Israel from the morning until the completion of the appointed time, and 70,000 people died from Dan to Beer Sheba.Ā  [[#Verse 16.]]Ā When the angelĀ extended his hand to destroy Jerusalem, theĀ LordĀ relented from his judgment.Ā He told the angel who was killing the people, ā€œThat’s enough! Stop now!ā€Ā (Now the angel of theĀ LordĀ was near the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.) [[#Verse 17.]]Ā When he saw the angel who was destroying the people, David said to theĀ Lord, ā€œLook, it is I who have sinned and done this evil thing! As for these sheep—what have they done? Attack me and my family.ā€ ### David Acquires a Threshing Floor and Constructs an Altar There [[#Verse 18.]]Ā So Gad went to David that day and told him, ā€œGo up and build an altar for theĀ LordĀ on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.ā€Ā  [[#Verse 19.]]Ā So David went up as Gad instructed him to do, according to theĀ Lord’s instructions. [[#Verse 20.]]Ā When Araunah looked out and saw the king and his servants approaching him, heĀ went out and bowed to the king with his faceĀ to the ground.Ā  [[#Verse 21.]]Ā Araunah said, ā€œWhy has my lord the king come to his servant?ā€ David replied, ā€œTo buy from you the threshing floor so I can build an altar for theĀ Lord, so that the plague may be removed from the people.ā€Ā  [[#Verse 22.]]Ā Araunah told David, ā€œMy lord the king may take whatever he wishesĀ and offer it. Look! Here are oxen for burnt offerings, and threshing sledgesĀ and harnessesĀ for wood. [[#Verse 23.]]Ā I, the servant of my lordĀ the king, give it all to the king!ā€ Araunah also told the king, ā€œMay theĀ LordĀ your God show you favor!ā€Ā  [[#Verse 24.]]Ā But the king said to Araunah, ā€œNo, I insist on buying it from you! I will not offer to theĀ LordĀ my God burnt sacrifices that cost me nothing.ā€ So David bought the threshing floor and the oxen for fifty pieces of silver.Ā  [[#Verse 25.]]Ā Then David built an altar for theĀ LordĀ there and offered burnt sacrifices and peace offerings. And theĀ LordĀ accepted prayers for the land, and the plague was removed from Israel. ## šŸ“– ==Verse-by-Verse Commentary== ###### Overall. ###### Verse 01. ###### Verse 02. ###### Verse 03. ###### Verse 04. ###### Verse 05. ###### Verse 06. ###### Verse 07. ###### Verse 08. ###### Verse 09. ###### Verse 10. ###### Verse 11. ###### Verse 12. ###### Verse 13. ###### Verse 14. ###### Verse 15. ###### Verse 16. ###### Verse 17. ###### Verse 18. ###### Verse 19. ###### Verse 20. ###### Verse 21. ###### Verse 22. ###### Verse 23. ###### Verse 24. ###### Verse 25. ## šŸ¤” Interesting Facts / Historical and Cultural Insights - coming soon ## 🧠 Chapter Summary - coming soon %%Write a short paragraph (3–5 sentences) summarizing what happens in this chapter. - What is the main event or teaching? - How does this chapter fit the book’s overall story? - What stands out immediately?
