They designatedĀ David as king over Israel.Ā David was thirty years old when he began to reign and he reigned for forty years.Ā In Hebron he reigned over Judah for seven years and six months, and in Jerusalem he reigned for thirty-three years over all Israel and Judah. ### David Occupies Jerusalem Then the king and his men advanced to Jerusalem against the Jebusites who lived in the land. The JebusitesĀ said to David, ā€œYou cannot invade this place! Even the blind and the lame will turn you back, saying, ā€˜David cannot invade this place!ā€™ā€ But David captured the fortress of Zion (that is, the City of David).Ā David said on that day, ā€œWhoever attacks the Jebusites must approach the ā€˜lame’ and the ā€˜blind’ who are David’s enemiesĀ by going through the water tunnel.ā€Ā For this reason it is said, ā€œThe blind and the lame cannot enter the palace.ā€ So David lived in the fortress and called it the City of David. David built all around it, from the terrace inwards.Ā David’s power grew steadily, for theĀ LordĀ GodĀ of Heaven’s ArmiesĀ was with him. King Hiram of Tyre sent messengers to David, along with cedar logs, carpenters, and stonemasons. They built a palaceĀ for David.Ā David realized that theĀ LordĀ had established him as king over Israel and that he had elevated his kingdom for the sake of his people Israel.Ā David married more concubines and wives from Jerusalem after he arrived from Hebron. Even more sons and daughters were born to David.Ā These are the names of children born to him in Jerusalem: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon,Ā Ibhar, Elishua, Nepheg, Japhia,Ā Elishama, Eliada, and Eliphelet. ### Conflict with the Philistines When the Philistines heard that David had been designatedĀ king over Israel, they allĀ went up to search for David. When David heard about it, he went down to the fortress.Ā Now the Philistines had arrived and spread out in the valley of Rephaim.Ā So David asked theĀ Lord, ā€œShould I march up against the Philistines? Will you hand them over to me?ā€ TheĀ LordĀ said to David, ā€œMarch up, for I will indeedĀ hand the Philistines over to you.ā€ [^1] So David marched against Baal Perazim and defeated them there. Then he said, ā€œTheĀ LordĀ has burst out against my enemies like water bursts out.ā€ So he called the name of that place Baal Perazim.Ā The PhilistinesĀ abandoned their idolsĀ there, and David and his men picked them up. The Philistines again came up and spread out in the valley of Rephaim.Ā So David asked theĀ LordĀ what he should do.Ā This timeĀ theĀ LordĀ said to him, ā€œDon’t march straight up. Instead, circle around behind them and come against them opposite the trees.Ā When you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the trees, act decisively. For at that moment theĀ LordĀ is going before you to strike down the armyĀ of the Philistines.ā€Ā David did just as theĀ LordĀ commanded him, and he struck down the Philistines from Gibeon all the way to Gezer. --- ## šŸ“– Verse-by-Verse Commentary Each verse is important. --- ## šŸ¤” Interesting Facts / Historical and Cultural Insights --- ## 🧠 Chapter Summary Write a short paragraph (3–5 sentences) summarizing what happens in this chapter. - What is the main event or teaching? - How does this chapter fit the book’s overall story? - What stands out immediately?
