Biblical Studies Press, 2005) ### Solomon Gathers Building Materials for the Temple 5Ā (5:15)Ā King Hiram of Tyre sent messengersĀ to Solomon when he heard that he had been anointed king in his father’s place. (Hiram had always been an ally of David.)Ā 2Ā Solomon then sent this message to Hiram:Ā 3Ā ā€œYou know that my father David was unable to build a temple to honor theĀ LordĀ his God, for he was busy fighting battles on all fronts while theĀ LordĀ subdued his enemies.Ā 4Ā But now theĀ LordĀ my God has made me secure on all fronts; there is no adversary or dangerous threat.Ā 5Ā So I have decidedĀ to build a temple to honor theĀ LordĀ my God, as theĀ LordĀ instructed my father David, ā€˜Your son, whom I will put on your throne in your place, is the one who will build a temple to honor me.’ 6Ā So now order some cedars of Lebanon to be cut for me. My servants will work with your servants. I will pay your servants whatever you say is appropriate, for you know that we have no one among us who knows how to cut down trees like the Sidonians.ā€ 7Ā When Hiram heard Solomon’s message, he was very happy. He said, ā€œTheĀ LordĀ is worthy of praise today because heĀ has given David a wise son to rule over this great nation.ā€Ā 8Ā Hiram then sent this message to Solomon: ā€œI receivedĀ the message you sent to me. I will give you all the cedars and evergreens you need.Ā 9Ā My servants will bring the timber down from Lebanon to the sea. I will send it by sea in raft-like bundles to the place you designate.Ā There I will separate the logsĀ and you can carry them away. In exchange you will supply the food I need for my royal court.ā€ 10Ā So Hiram supplied the cedars and evergreens Solomon needed,Ā 11Ā and Solomon supplied Hiram annually with 20,000 corsĀ of wheat as provision for his royal court,Ā as well as 120,000 gallonsĀ of pureĀ olive oil.Ā 12Ā So theĀ LordĀ gave Solomon wisdom, as he had promised him. And Hiram and Solomon were at peace and made a treaty. 13Ā King Solomon conscriptedĀ work crewsĀ from throughout Israel, 30,000 men in all.Ā 14Ā He sent them to Lebanon in shifts of 10,000 men per month. They worked in Lebanon for one month, and then spent two months at home. Adoniram was supervisor ofĀ the work crews.Ā 15Ā Solomon also had 70,000 common laborersĀ and 80,000 stonecuttersĀ in the hills,Ā 16Ā besides 3,300 officialsĀ who supervised the workers.Ā 17Ā By royal orderĀ they supplied large valuable stones in order to build the temple’s foundation with chiseled stone.Ā 18Ā Solomon’s and Hiram’s construction workers,Ā along with men from Byblos,Ā did the chiseling and prepared the wood and stones for the building of the temple. ## ==šŸ“– Verse-by-Verse Commentary== - coming soon. %% PRIVATE NOTES (only I see this) Write something for each verse Each verse is important. %% ## šŸ¤” Interesting Facts / Historical and Cultural Insights - coming soon. %% PRIVATE NOTES (only I see this) Write down things that are not straight from commentary but interesting facts that ground the text in history. %% ## 🧠 Chapter Summary - coming soon. %% PRIVATE NOTES (only I see this) Write a short paragraph (3–5 sentences) summarizing what happens in this chapter. - What is the main event or teaching? - How does this chapter fit the book’s overall story? - What stands out immediately?
