Biblical Studies Press, 2005) ### Elijah Meets the King’s Servant 18Ā Some time later, in the third year of the famine,Ā theĀ Lord’sĀ message came to Elijah, ā€œGo, make an appearance before Ahab, so I may send rain on the surface of the ground.ā€Ā 2Ā So Elijah went to make an appearance before Ahab. Now the famine was severe in Samaria.Ā 3Ā So Ahab summoned Obadiah, who supervised the palace. (Now Obadiah was a very loyal follower of theĀ Lord.Ā 4Ā When Jezebel was killingĀ theĀ Lord’s prophets, Obadiah took 100 prophets and hid them in two caves in two groups of fifty. He also brought them food and water.)Ā 5Ā Ahab told Obadiah, ā€œGo through the land to all the springs and valleys. Maybe we can find some grazing areasĀ so we can keep the horses and mules alive and not have to killĀ some of the animals.ā€Ā 6Ā They divided up the land between them to search it; Ahab went one way by himself and Obadiah went the other way by himself. 7Ā As Obadiah was traveling along, Elijah met him.Ā When he recognized him, he fell facedown to the ground and said, ā€œIs it really you, my master, Elijah?ā€Ā 8Ā He replied, ā€œYes,Ā go and say to your master, ā€˜Elijah is back.ā€™ā€Ā 9Ā ObadiahĀ said, ā€œWhat sin have I committed that you are ready to hand your servant over to Ahab for execution?Ā 10Ā As certainly as theĀ LordĀ your God lives, my master has sent to every nation and kingdom in an effort to find you. When they say, ā€˜He’s not here,’ he makes themĀ swear an oath that they could not find you.Ā 11Ā Now you say, ā€˜Go and say to your master, ā€œElijah is back.ā€ā€™Ā 12Ā But when I leave you, theĀ Lord’s Spirit will carry you away so I can’t find you.Ā If I go tell Ahab I’ve seen you, he won’t be able to find you and he will kill me.Ā That would not be fair,Ā because your servant has been a loyal follower ofĀ theĀ LordĀ from my youth.Ā 13Ā Certainly my master is aware of what I didĀ when Jezebel was killing theĀ Lord’s prophets. I hid 100 of theĀ Lord’s prophets in two caves in two groups of fifty and I brought them food and water.Ā 14Ā Now you say, ā€˜Go and say to your master, ā€œElijah is back,ā€ā€™Ā but he will kill me.ā€Ā 15Ā But Elijah said, ā€œAs certainly as theĀ LordĀ of Heaven’s ArmiesĀ lives (whom I serve),Ā I will make an appearance before him today.ā€ ### Elijah Confronts Baal’s Prophets 16Ā When Obadiah went and informed Ahab, the king went to meet Elijah.Ā 17Ā When Ahab saw Elijah, heĀ said to him, ā€œIs it really you, the one who brings disaster onĀ Israel?ā€Ā 18Ā ElijahĀ replied, ā€œI have not brought disaster onĀ Israel. But you and your father’s dynasty have, by abandoning theĀ Lord’s commandments and following the Baals.Ā 19Ā Now send out messengersĀ and assemble all Israel before me at Mount Carmel, as well as the 450 prophets of Baal and 400 prophets of Asherah whom Jezebel supports.ā€ 20Ā Ahab sent messengers to all the Israelites and had the prophets assemble at Mount Carmel.Ā 21Ā Elijah approached all the people and said, ā€œHow long are you going to be paralyzed by indecision?Ā If theĀ LordĀ is the true God,Ā then follow him, but if Baal is, follow him!ā€ But the people did not say a word.Ā 22Ā Elijah said to them:Ā ā€œI am the only prophet of theĀ LordĀ who is left, but there are 450 prophets of Baal.Ā 23Ā Let them bring us two bulls. Let them choose one of the bulls for themselves, cut it up into pieces, and place it on the wood. But they must not set it on fire. I will do the same to the other bull and place it on the wood. But I will not set it on fire.Ā 24Ā Then youĀ will invoke the name of your god, and I will invoke the name of theĀ Lord. The god who responds with fire will demonstrate that he is the true God.ā€Ā All the people responded, ā€œThis will be a fair test.ā€ 25Ā Elijah told the prophets of Baal, ā€œChoose one of the bulls for yourselves and go first, for you are the majority. Invoke the name of your god, but do not light a fire.ā€Ā 26Ā So they took a bull, as he had suggested,Ā and prepared it. They invoked the name of Baal from morning until noon, saying, ā€œBaal, answer us.ā€ But there was no sound and no answer. They jumpedĀ around on the altar they had made.Ā 27Ā At noon Elijah mocked them, ā€œYell louder! After all, he is a god; he may be deep in thought, or perhaps he stepped out for a moment or has taken a trip. Perhaps he is sleeping and needs to be awakened.ā€Ā 28Ā So they yelled louder and, in accordance with their prescribed ritual,Ā mutilated themselves with swords and spears until their bodies were covered with blood.Ā 29Ā Throughout the afternoon they were in an ecstatic frenzy,Ā but there was no sound, no answer, and no response. 30Ā Elijah then told all the people, ā€œApproach me.ā€ So all the people approached him. He repaired the altar of theĀ LordĀ that had been torn down.Ā 31Ā Then Elijah took twelve stones, corresponding to the number of tribes that descended from Jacob, to whom theĀ Lord’s message had come, ā€œIsrael will be your name.ā€Ā 32Ā With the stones he constructed an altar for theĀ Lord.Ā Around the altar he made a trench large enough to contain two seahsĀ of seed.Ā 33Ā He arranged the wood, cut up the bull, and placed it on the wood. Then he said, ā€œFill four water jars and pour the water on the offering and the wood.ā€Ā 34Ā When they had done so,Ā he said, ā€œDo it again.ā€ So they did it again. Then he said, ā€œDo it a third time.ā€ So they did it a third time.Ā 35Ā The water flowed down all sides of the altar and filled the trench.Ā 36Ā When it was time for the evening offering,Ā Elijah the prophet approached the altarĀ and prayed: ā€œOĀ LordĀ God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, proveĀ today that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant and have done all these things at your command.Ā 37Ā Answer me, OĀ Lord, answer me, so these people will know that you, OĀ Lord, are the true GodĀ and that you are winning back their allegiance.ā€Ā 38Ā Then fire from theĀ LordĀ fell from the sky.Ā It consumed the offering, the wood, the stones, and the dirt, and licked up the water in the trench.Ā 39Ā When all the people saw this, they threw themselves down with their faces to the ground and said, ā€œTheĀ LordĀ is the true God!Ā TheĀ LordĀ is the true God!ā€Ā 40Ā Elijah told them, ā€œSeize the prophets of Baal! Don’t let even one of them escape!ā€ So they seized them, and Elijah led them down to the Kishon Valley and executedĀ them there. 41Ā Then Elijah told Ahab, ā€œGo on up and eat and drink, for the sound of a heavy rainstorm can be heard.ā€Ā 42Ā So Ahab went on up to eat and drink, while Elijah climbed to the top of Carmel. He bent down toward the ground and put his face between his knees.Ā 43Ā He told his servant, ā€œGo on up and look in the direction of the sea.ā€ So he went on up, looked, and reported, ā€œThere is nothing.ā€Ā Seven times Elijah sent him to look.Ā 44Ā The seventh time the servantĀ said, ā€œLook, a small cloud, the size of the palm of a man’s hand, is rising up from the sea.ā€ ElijahĀ then said, ā€œGo and tell Ahab, ā€˜Hitch up the chariots and go down, so that the rain won’t overtake you.ā€™ā€Ā 45Ā Meanwhile the sky was covered with dark clouds, the wind blew, and there was a heavy rainstorm. Ahab rode towardĀ Jezreel.Ā 46Ā Now theĀ LordĀ energized Elijah with power;Ā he tucked his robe into his beltĀ and ran ahead of Ahab all the way to Jezreel. ## ==šŸ“– Verse-by-Verse Commentary== - coming soon. %% PRIVATE NOTES (only I see this) Write something for each verse Each verse is important. %% ## šŸ¤” Interesting Facts / Historical and Cultural Insights - coming soon. %% PRIVATE NOTES (only I see this) Write down things that are not straight from commentary but interesting facts that ground the text in history. %% ## 🧠 Chapter Summary - coming soon. %% PRIVATE NOTES (only I see this) Write a short paragraph (3–5 sentences) summarizing what happens in this chapter. - What is the main event or teaching? - How does this chapter fit the book’s overall story? - What stands out immediately?
