## š Scripture Text (NET)
(The NET Bible: New English Translation. Biblical Studies Press, 2005)
### Amaziahās Reign over Judah
14Ā In the second year of the reign of Israelās King Joash son of Joahaz,Ā JoashāsĀ son Amaziah became king over Judah.Ā 2Ā He was twenty-five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned for twenty-nine years in Jerusalem. His motherĀ was Jehoaddan, who was from Jerusalem.Ā 3Ā He did what theĀ LordĀ approved,Ā but not like David his ancestor had done. He followed the example of his father Joash.Ā 4Ā But the high places were not eliminated; the people continued to offer sacrifices and burn incense on the high places.
5Ā When he had secured control of the kingdom,Ā he executed the servants who had assassinated his father.Ā 6Ā But he did not execute the sons of the assassins. He obeyed theĀ Lordās commandment as recorded in the scroll of the law of Moses, āFathers must not be put to death for what their sons do,Ā and sons must not be put to death for what their fathers do.Ā A man must be put to death only for his own sin.ā
7Ā He defeatedĀ 10,000 Edomites in the Salt Valley; he captured Sela in battle and renamed it Joktheel, a name it has retained to this very day.Ā 8Ā Then Amaziah sent messengers to Jehoash son of Jehoahaz son of Jehu, king of Israel. He said, āCome, letās meet face to face.āĀ 9Ā King Jehoash of Israel sent this message back to King Amaziah of Judah, āA thornbush in Lebanon sent this message to a cedar in Lebanon, āGive your daughter to my son as a wife.ā Then a wild animalĀ of Lebanon came by and trampled down the thorn.Ā 10Ā You thoroughly defeated Edom,Ā and it has gone to your head!Ā Gloat over your success,Ā but stay in your palace. Why bring calamity on yourself? Why bring down yourself and Judah along with you?āĀ 11Ā But Amaziah would not heed the warning,Ā so King Jehoash of Israel attacked.Ā He and King Amaziah of Judah met face to faceĀ in Beth Shemesh of Judah.Ā 12Ā Judah was defeated by Israel, and each man ran back home.Ā 13Ā King Jehoash of Israel captured King Amaziah of Judah, son of Jehoash son of Ahaziah, in Beth Shemesh. HeĀ attackedĀ Jerusalem and broke down the wall of Jerusalem from the Gate of Ephraim to the Corner Gateāa distance of about 600 feet.Ā 14Ā He took away all the gold and silver, all the items found in theĀ Lordās temple and in the treasuries of the royal palace, and some hostages.Ā Then he went back to Samaria.
15Ā The rest of the events of JehoashāsĀ reign, including all his accomplishments and his successful war with King Amaziah of Judah, are recorded in the scroll called the Annals of the Kings of Israel.Ā 16Ā Jehoash passed awayĀ and was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel. His son Jeroboam replaced him as king.
17Ā King Amaziah son of Joash of Judah lived for fifteen years after the death of King Jehoash son of Jehoahaz of Israel.Ā 18Ā The rest of the events of Amaziahās reign are recorded in the scroll called the Annals of the Kings of Judah.Ā 19Ā Conspirators plotted against him in Jerusalem,Ā so he fled to Lachish. But they sent assassins after him,Ā and they killed him there.Ā 20Ā His body was carried back by horses,Ā and he was buried in Jerusalem with his ancestors in the City of David.Ā 21Ā All the people of Judah took Azariah, who was sixteen years old, and made him king in his father Amaziahās place.Ā 22Ā AzariahĀ built up Elat and restored it to Judah after the kingĀ had passed away.
### Jeroboam IIās Reign over Israel
23Ā In the fifteenth year of the reign of Judahās King Amaziah son of Joash, Jeroboam son of Joash became king over Israel. He reigned for forty-one years in Samaria.Ā 24Ā He did evil in the sight ofĀ theĀ Lord; he did not repudiateĀ the sinful ways of Jeroboam son of Nebat who encouraged Israel to sin.Ā 25Ā He restored the border of Israel from Lebo HamathĀ in the north to the sea of the rift valleyĀ in the south,Ā just as in the message from theĀ LordĀ God of Israel that he had announced through his servant Jonah son of Amittai, the prophet from Gath Hepher.Ā 26Ā TheĀ LordĀ saw Israelās intense suffering;Ā everyone was weak and incapacitated and Israel had no deliverer.Ā 27Ā TheĀ LordĀ had not decreed that he would blot out Israelās memoryĀ from under heaven,Ā so he delivered them through Jeroboam son of Joash.
28Ā The rest of the events of Jeroboamās reign, including all his accomplishments, his military success in restoring Israelite control over Damascus and Hamath, are recorded in the scroll called the Annals of the Kings of Israel.Ā 29Ā Jeroboam passed awayĀ and was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel.Ā His son Zechariah replaced him as king.
