Biblical Studies Press, 2005) ### Josiah Repents 22Ā Josiah was eight years old when he became king, and he reigned for thirty-one years in Jerusalem. His motherĀ was Jedidah, daughter of Adaiah, from Bozkath.Ā 2Ā He did what theĀ LordĀ approvedĀ and followed in his ancestor David’s footsteps;Ā he did not deviate to the right or the left. 3Ā In the eighteenth year of King Josiah’s reign, the king sent the scribe Shaphan son of Azaliah, son of Meshullam, to theĀ Lord’s temple with these orders:Ā 4Ā ā€œGo up to Hilkiah the high priest and have him melt downĀ the silver that has been brought by the people to theĀ Lord’s temple and has been collected by the guards at the door.Ā 5Ā Have them hand it over to the construction foremenĀ assigned to theĀ Lord’s temple. They in turn should pay the temple workers to repair it,Ā 6Ā including craftsmen, builders, and masons, and should buy wood and chiseled stone for the repair work.Ā 7Ā Do not audit the foremen who disburse the silver, for they are honest.ā€ 8Ā Hilkiah the high priest informed Shaphan the scribe, ā€œI found the scroll of the law in theĀ Lord’s temple.ā€ Hilkiah gave the scroll to Shaphan and he read it.Ā 9Ā Shaphan the scribe went to the king and reported,Ā ā€œYour servants melted down the silver in the templeĀ and handed it over to the construction foremen assigned to theĀ Lord’s temple.ā€Ā 10Ā Then Shaphan the scribe told the king, ā€œHilkiah the priest has given me a scroll.ā€ Shaphan read it out loud before the king.Ā 11Ā When the king heard the words of the law scroll, he tore his clothes.Ā 12Ā The king ordered Hilkiah the priest, Ahikam son of Shaphan, Achbor son of Micaiah, Shaphan the scribe, and Asaiah the king’s servant,Ā 13Ā ā€œGo, seek an oracle fromĀ theĀ LordĀ for me and the people—for all Judah. Find out about the words of this scroll that has been discovered. For theĀ Lord’s great fury has been ignited against us, because our ancestors have not obeyed the words of this scroll by doing all that it instructs us to do.ā€ 14Ā So Hilkiah the priest, Ahikam, Achbor, Shaphan, and Asaiah went to Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shullam son of Tikvah, the son of Harhas, the supervisor of the wardrobe.Ā (She lived in Jerusalem in the MishnehĀ district.) They stated their business,Ā 15Ā and she said to them: ā€œThis is what theĀ LordĀ God of Israel has said: ā€˜Say this to the man who sent you to me:Ā 16Ā ā€œThis is what theĀ LordĀ has said: ā€˜I am about to bring disaster on this place and its residents, all the things in the scroll that the king of Judah has read.Ā 17Ā This will happen because they have abandoned me and offered sacrificesĀ to other gods, angering me with all the idols they have made.Ā My anger will ignite against this place and will not be extinguished!ā€™ā€Ā 18Ā Say this to the king of Judah, who sent you to seek an oracle from theĀ Lord: ā€œThis is what theĀ LordĀ God of Israel has said concerning the words you have heard:Ā 19Ā ā€˜You displayed a sensitive spiritĀ and humbled yourself before theĀ LordĀ when you heard how I intended to make this place and its residents into an appalling example of an accursed people.Ā You tore your clothes and wept before me, and I have heard you,’ says theĀ Lord.Ā 20Ā ā€˜Therefore I will allow you to die and be buried in peace.Ā You will not have to witnessĀ all the disaster I will bring on this place.ā€™ā€ā€™ā€ Then they reported back to the king. ## ==šŸ“– Verse-by-Verse Commentary== - coming soon. %% PRIVATE NOTES (only I see this) Write something for each verse Each verse is important. %% ## šŸ¤” Interesting Facts / Historical and Cultural Insights - coming soon. %% PRIVATE NOTES (only I see this) Write down things that are not straight from commentary but interesting facts that ground the text in history. %% ## 🧠 Chapter Summary - coming soon. %% PRIVATE NOTES (only I see this) Write a short paragraph (3–5 sentences) summarizing what happens in this chapter. - What is the main event or teaching? - How does this chapter fit the book’s overall story? - What stands out immediately?
