## š Scripture Text (NET)
(The NET Bible: New English Translation. Biblical Studies Press, 2005)
### The Lord Sends a Plague against Israel
21Ā An adversaryĀ opposedĀ Israel, inciting David to count how many warriors Israel had.Ā 2Ā David told Joab and the leaders of the army,Ā āGo, count the number of warriorsĀ from Beer Sheba to Dan. Then bring back a report to me so I may know how many we have.āĀ 3Ā Joab replied, āMay theĀ LordĀ make his armyĀ a hundred times larger! My master, O king, do not all of them serve my master? Why does my master want to do this? Why bring judgment on Israel?ā
4Ā But the kingās edict stood, despite Joabās objections.Ā So Joab left and traveled throughout Israel before returning to Jerusalem.Ā 5Ā Joab reported to David the number of warriors.Ā In all Israel there were 1,100,000 sword-wieldingĀ soldiers; Judah alone had 470,000 sword-wielding soldiers.Ā 6Ā Now JoabĀ did not number Levi and Benjamin, for the kingās edict disgusted him.Ā 7Ā God was also offended by it,Ā so he attacked Israel.
8Ā David said to God, āI have sinned greatly by doing this! Now, please remove the guilt of your servant, for I have acted very foolishly.āĀ 9Ā TheĀ LordĀ told Gad, Davidās prophet,Ā 10Ā āGo, tell David, āThis is what theĀ LordĀ says: āI am offering you three forms of judgment from which to choose. Pick one of them.āāāĀ 11Ā Gad went to David and told him, āThis is what theĀ LordĀ says: āPick one of these:Ā 12Ā threeĀ years of famine, or three months being chased by your enemies and struck down by their swords,Ā or three days being struck down by theĀ Lord, during which a plague will invade the land and the angel of theĀ LordĀ will destroy throughout Israelās territory.āĀ Now, decide what I should tell the one who sent me.āĀ 13Ā David said to Gad, āI am very upset! I prefer to be attacked by theĀ Lord, for his mercy is very great; I do not want to be attacked by men!āĀ 14Ā So theĀ LordĀ sent a plague through Israel, and 70,000 Israelite men died.
15Ā God sent an angelĀ to ravageĀ Jerusalem. As he was doing so,Ā theĀ LordĀ watchedĀ and relented fromĀ his judgment.Ā He told the angel who was destroying, āThatās enough!Ā Stop now!ā
Now the angel of theĀ LordĀ was standing near the threshing floor of OrnanĀ the Jebusite.Ā 16Ā David looked up and saw the angel of theĀ LordĀ standing between the earth and sky with his sword drawn and in his hand, stretched out over Jerusalem. David and the leaders, covered with sackcloth, threw themselves down with their faces to the ground.Ā 17Ā David said to God, āWas I not the one who decided to number the army? I am the one who sinned and committed this awful deed!Ā As for these sheepāwhat have they done? OĀ LordĀ my God, attack me and my family,Ā but remove the plague from your people!ā
18Ā So the angel of theĀ LordĀ told Gad to instruct David to go up and buildĀ an altar for theĀ LordĀ on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.Ā 19Ā So David went up as Gad instructed him to do in the name of theĀ Lord.Ā 20Ā While Ornan was threshing wheat, he turned and saw the messenger, and he and his four sons hid themselves.Ā 21Ā When David came to Ornan, Ornan looked and saw David; he came out from the threshing floor and bowed to David with his faceĀ to the ground.Ā 22Ā David said to Ornan, āSell me the threshing floorĀ so I can buildĀ on it an altar for theĀ LordāIāll pay top priceāso that the plague may be removedĀ from the people.āĀ 23Ā Ornan told David, āYou can have it!Ā My master, the king, may do what he wants.Ā Look, I am giving you the oxen for burnt sacrifices, the threshing sledges for wood, and the wheat for an offering. I give it all to you.āĀ 24Ā King David replied to Ornan, āNo, I insist on buying it for top price.Ā I will not offer to theĀ LordĀ what belongs to you or offer a burnt sacrificeĀ that cost me nothing.Ā 25Ā So David bought the place from Ornan for 600 pieces of gold.Ā 26Ā David built there an altar to theĀ LordĀ and offered burnt sacrifices and peace offerings.Ā He called out to theĀ Lord, and theĀ LordĀ responded by sending fire from the sky and consuming the burnt sacrifice on the altar.Ā 27Ā TheĀ LordĀ ordered the messengerĀ to put his sword back into its sheath.
28Ā At that time, when David saw that theĀ LordĀ responded to him at the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite, he sacrificed there.Ā 29Ā Now theĀ Lordās tabernacle (which Moses had made in the wilderness) and the altar for burnt sacrifices were at that time at the worship centerĀ in Gibeon.Ā 30Ā But David could not go before it to seek Godās will, for he was afraid of the sword of the angel of theĀ Lord.
