Biblical Studies Press, 2005) God’s Spirit came upon Azariah son of Oded.Ā 2Ā He metĀ Asa and told him, ā€œListen to me, Asa and all Judah and Benjamin! TheĀ LordĀ is with you when you are loyal to him.Ā If you seek him, he will respond to you,Ā but if you reject him, he will reject you.Ā 3Ā For a long timeĀ Israel had not sought the one true God, or a priest to instruct them, or the law.Ā 4Ā Because of their distress, they turned back to theĀ LordĀ God of Israel. They sought him and he responded to them.Ā 5Ā In those daysĀ no one could travel safely,Ā for total chaos had overtaken all the people of the surrounding lands.Ā 6Ā One nation was crushed by another, and one city by another, for God caused them to be in great turmoil.Ā 7Ā But as for you, be strong and don’t get discouraged,Ā for your work will be rewarded.ā€ 8Ā When Asa heard these words and the prophecy of Oded the prophet, he was encouraged.Ā He removed the detestable idols from the entire land of Judah and Benjamin and from the cities he had seized in the Ephraimite hill country. He repaired the altar of theĀ LordĀ in front of the porch of theĀ Lord’s temple. 9Ā He assembled all Judah and Benjamin, as well as the settlersĀ from Ephraim, Manasseh, and Simeon who had come to live with them. Many people from Israel had come there to liveĀ when they saw that theĀ LordĀ his God was with him.Ā 10Ā They assembled in Jerusalem in the third month of the fifteenth year of Asa’s reign.Ā 11Ā At that timeĀ they sacrificed to theĀ LordĀ some of the plunder they had brought back, including 700 head of cattle and 7,000 sheep.Ā 12Ā They solemnly agreedĀ to seek theĀ LordĀ God of their ancestorsĀ with their whole heart and being.Ā 13Ā Anyone who would not seek theĀ LordĀ God of Israel would be executed, whether they were young or old,Ā male or female.Ā 14Ā They swore their allegiance to theĀ Lord, shouting their approval loudly and sounding trumpets and horns.Ā 15Ā All Judah was happy about the oath, because they made the vow with their whole heart. They willingly sought theĀ LordĀ and he responded to them.Ā He made them secure on every side. 16Ā King Asa also removed Maacah his grandmotherĀ from her position as queen motherĀ because she had made a loathsome Asherah pole. Asa cut down her loathsome pole and crushed and burned it in the Kidron Valley.Ā 17Ā The high places were not eliminated from Israel, yet Asa was wholeheartedly devoted to theĀ LordĀ throughout his lifetime.Ā 18Ā He brought the holy items that his father and he had made into God’s temple, including the silver, gold, and other articles. ### Asa’s Failures 19Ā There was no more war until the thirty-fifth year of Asa’s reign. ## ==šŸ“– Verse-by-Verse Commentary== - coming soon. %% PRIVATE NOTES (only I see this) Write something for each verse Each verse is important. %% ## šŸ¤” Interesting Facts / Historical and Cultural Insights - coming soon. %% PRIVATE NOTES (only I see this) Write down things that are not straight from commentary but interesting facts that ground the text in history. %% ## 🧠 Chapter Summary - coming soon. %% PRIVATE NOTES (only I see this) Write a short paragraph (3–5 sentences) summarizing what happens in this chapter. - What is the main event or teaching? - How does this chapter fit the book’s overall story? - What stands out immediately?
