Biblical Studies Press, 2005) ### Jehoshaphat Allies with Ahab 18Ā Jehoshaphat was very wealthy and greatly respected. He made an alliance by marriage with Ahab,Ā 2Ā and after several yearsĀ went down to visitĀ Ahab in Samaria. Ahab slaughtered many sheep and cattle to honor Jehoshaphat and those who came with him.Ā He persuaded him to join in an attackĀ against Ramoth Gilead.Ā 3Ā King Ahab of Israel said to King Jehoshaphat of Judah, ā€œWill you go with me to attack Ramoth Gilead?ā€ He replied, ā€œI will support you; my army is at your disposal and will support you in battle.ā€Ā 4Ā Then Jehoshaphat said further to the king of Israel,Ā ā€œFirst,Ā please seek an oracle from theĀ Lord.ā€Ā 5Ā So the king of Israel assembled 400 prophets and asked them, ā€œShould we attack Ramoth Gilead or not?ā€Ā They said, ā€œAttack! GodĀ will hand it over to the king.ā€Ā 6Ā But Jehoshaphat asked, ā€œIs there not a prophet of theĀ LordĀ still here, that we may ask him?ā€Ā 7Ā The king of Israel answered Jehoshaphat, ā€œThere is still one man through whom we can seek theĀ Lord’s will,Ā but I despiseĀ him because he does not prophesy prosperity for me, but alwaysĀ disaster—Micaiah son of Imlah.ā€ Jehoshaphat said, ā€œThe king should not say such things!ā€Ā 8Ā The king of Israel summoned an officer and said, ā€œQuickly bring Micaiah son of Imlah.ā€ 9Ā Now the king of Israel and King Jehoshaphat of Judah were sitting on their respective thrones, dressed in their royal robes, at the threshing floor atĀ the entrance of the gate of Samaria. All the prophets were prophesying before them.Ā 10Ā Zedekiah son of Kenaanah made iron horns and said, ā€œThis is what theĀ LordĀ says, ā€˜With these you will gore Syria until they are destroyed.ā€™ā€Ā 11Ā All the prophets were prophesying the same, saying, ā€œAttack Ramoth Gilead! You will succeed; theĀ LordĀ will hand it over to the king.ā€Ā 12Ā Now the messenger who went to summon Micaiah said to him, ā€œLook, the prophets are in complete agreement that the king will succeed.Ā Your words must agree with theirs; you must predict success!ā€Ā 13Ā But Micaiah said, ā€œAs certainly as theĀ LordĀ lives, I will say what my God tells me to say!ā€ 14Ā MicaiahĀ came before the king and the king asked him, ā€œMicaiah, should we attack Ramoth Gilead or not?ā€ He answered him, ā€œAttack! You will succeed; they will be handed over to you.ā€Ā 15Ā The king said to him, ā€œHow many times must I make you solemnly promise inĀ the name of theĀ LordĀ to tell me only the truth?ā€Ā 16Ā MicaiahĀ replied, ā€œI saw all Israel scattered on the mountains like sheep that have no shepherd. Then theĀ LordĀ said, ā€˜They have no master. They should go home in peace.ā€™ā€Ā 17Ā The king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, ā€œDidn’t I tell you he does not prophesy prosperity for me, but disaster?ā€Ā 18Ā MicaiahĀ said, ā€œThat being the case, listen to theĀ Lord’s message. I saw theĀ LordĀ sitting on his throne, with all the heavenly assembly standing on his right and on his left.Ā 19Ā TheĀ LordĀ said, ā€˜Who will deceive King Ahab of Israel, so he will attack Ramoth Gilead and die there?’ One said this and another that.Ā 20Ā Then a spiritĀ stepped forward and stood before theĀ Lord. He said, ā€˜I will deceive him.’ TheĀ LordĀ asked him, ā€˜How?’ 21Ā He replied, ā€˜I will go out and be a lying spirit in the mouths of all his prophets.’ TheĀ LordĀ said, ā€˜Deceive and overpower him.Ā Go out and do as you have proposed.’ 22Ā So now, look, theĀ LordĀ has placed a lying spirit in the mouths of all these prophets of yours, but theĀ LordĀ has decreed disaster for you.ā€Ā 23Ā Zedekiah son of Kenaanah approached, hit Micaiah on the jaw, and said, ā€œWhich way did theĀ Lord’s Spirit go when he went from me to speak to you?ā€Ā 24Ā Micaiah replied, ā€œLook, you will see in the day when you go into an inner room to hide.ā€Ā 25Ā Then the king of Israel said, ā€œTake Micaiah and return him to Amon the city official and Joash the king’s son.Ā 26Ā Say, ā€˜This is what the king says: ā€œPut this man in prison. Give him only a little bread and waterĀ until I return safely.ā€ā€™ā€Ā 27Ā Micaiah said, ā€œIf you really do return safely, then theĀ LordĀ has not spoken through me!ā€ Then he added, ā€œTake note,Ā all you people.ā€ 28Ā The king of Israel and King Jehoshaphat of Judah attacked Ramoth Gilead.Ā 29Ā The king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, ā€œI will disguise myself and then enterĀ the battle, but you wear your royal attire.ā€ So the king of Israel disguised himself and they entered the battle.Ā 30Ā Now the king of Syria had ordered his chariot commanders, ā€œDo not fight common soldiers or high ranking officers;Ā fight only the king of Israel!ā€Ā 31Ā When the chariot commanders saw Jehoshaphat, they said, ā€œHe must be the king of Israel!ā€ So they turned and attacked him, but Jehoshaphat cried out. TheĀ LordĀ helped him; God lured them away from him.Ā 32Ā When the chariot commanders realized he was not the king of Israel, they turned away from him.Ā 33Ā Now an archer shot an arrow at random,Ā and it struck the king of Israel between the plates of his armor. The kingĀ ordered his charioteer, ā€œTurn around and take me from the battle line,Ā for I am wounded.ā€Ā 34Ā While the battle raged throughout the day, the king of Israel stood propped up in his chariot opposite the Syrians. He died in the evening as the sun was setting. ## ==šŸ“– Verse-by-Verse Commentary== - coming soon. %% PRIVATE NOTES (only I see this) Write something for each verse Each verse is important. %% ## šŸ¤” Interesting Facts / Historical and Cultural Insights - coming soon. %% PRIVATE NOTES (only I see this) Write down things that are not straight from commentary but interesting facts that ground the text in history. %% ## 🧠 Chapter Summary - coming soon. %% PRIVATE NOTES (only I see this) Write a short paragraph (3–5 sentences) summarizing what happens in this chapter. - What is the main event or teaching? - How does this chapter fit the book’s overall story? - What stands out immediately?
