Biblical Studies Press, 2005) Jehoshaphat passed awayĀ and was buried with his ancestorsĀ in the City of David.Ā His son JehoramĀ replaced him as king. ### Jehoram’s Reign 2Ā His brothers, Jehoshaphat’s sons, were Azariah, Jechiel, Zechariah, Azariahu, Michael, and Shephatiah. All these were sons of King Jehoshaphat of Israel.Ā 3Ā Their father gave them many presents, including silver, gold, and other precious items, along with fortified cities in Judah. But he gave the kingdom to Jehoram because he was the firstborn. 4Ā Jehoram took control of his father’s kingdom and became powerful.Ā Then he killed all his brothers,Ā as well as some of the officials of Israel.Ā 5Ā Jehoram was thirty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned for eight years in Jerusalem.Ā 6Ā He followed in the footsteps of the kings of Israel, just as Ahab’s dynasty had done, for he married Ahab’s daughter.Ā He did evil in the sight ofĀ theĀ Lord.Ā 7Ā But theĀ LordĀ was unwilling to destroy David’s dynastyĀ because of the promiseĀ he had made to give David a perpetual dynasty. 8Ā During Jehoram’sĀ reign Edom freed themselves from Judah’s control and set up their own king.Ā 9Ā Jehoram crossed over with his officers and all his chariots. The Edomites, who had surrounded him, attacked at night and defeated him and his chariot officers.Ā 10Ā So Edom has remained free from Judah’s control to this very day.Ā At that same time Libnah also rebelled and freed themselves from Judah’s controlĀ because JehoramĀ rejected theĀ LordĀ God of his ancestors.Ā 11Ā He also built high places on the hills of Judah; he encouraged the residents of Jerusalem to be unfaithful to theĀ LordĀ and led Judah away from theĀ Lord. 12Ā JehoramĀ received this letter from Elijah the prophet: ā€œThis is what theĀ LordĀ God of your ancestor David says: ā€˜YouĀ have not followed in the footstepsĀ of your father Jehoshaphat and ofĀ King Asa of Judah,Ā 13Ā but have instead followed in the footsteps of the kings of Israel. You encouraged the people of Judah and the residents of Jerusalem to be unfaithful to theĀ Lord, just as the family of Ahab does in Israel.Ā You also killed your brothers, members of your father’s family,Ā who were better than you.Ā 14Ā So look, theĀ LordĀ is about to severely afflictĀ your people, your sons, your wives, and all you own.Ā 15Ā And you will get a serious, chronic intestinal disease which will cause your intestines to come out.ā€™ā€ 16Ā TheĀ LordĀ stirred up against Jehoram the PhilistinesĀ and the Arabs who lived beside the Cushites.Ā 17Ā They attacked Judah and swept through it.Ā They carried off everything they found in the royal palace,Ā including his sons and wives. None of his sons was left, except for his youngest, Ahaziah.Ā 18Ā After all this happened, theĀ LordĀ afflicted him with an incurable intestinal disease.Ā 19Ā After about two years his intestines came out because of the disease, so that he died a very painful death.Ā His people did not make a bonfire to honor him, as they had done for his ancestors. 20Ā Jehoram was thirty-two years old when he became king and he reigned eight years in Jerusalem. No one regretted his death;Ā he was buried in the City of David,Ā but not in the royal tombs. ## ==šŸ“– Verse-by-Verse Commentary== - coming soon. %% PRIVATE NOTES (only I see this) Write something for each verse Each verse is important. %% ## šŸ¤” Interesting Facts / Historical and Cultural Insights - coming soon. %% PRIVATE NOTES (only I see this) Write down things that are not straight from commentary but interesting facts that ground the text in history. %% ## 🧠 Chapter Summary - coming soon. %% PRIVATE NOTES (only I see this) Write a short paragraph (3–5 sentences) summarizing what happens in this chapter. - What is the main event or teaching? - How does this chapter fit the book’s overall story? - What stands out immediately?
