Biblical Studies Press, 2005) ### Joash’s Reign 24Ā Joash was seven years old when he began to reign. He reigned for forty years in Jerusalem. His motherĀ was Zibiah, who was from Beer Sheba.Ā 2Ā Joash did what theĀ LordĀ approvedĀ throughout the lifetimeĀ of Jehoiada the priest.Ā 3Ā Jehoiada chose two wives for him who gave him sons and daughters. 4Ā Later, Joash was determined to repair theĀ Lord’s temple.Ā 5Ā He assembled the priests and Levites and ordered them, ā€œGo out to the cities of Judah and collect the annual quota of silver from all Israel for repairs on the temple of your God. Be quick about it!ā€ But the Levites delayed. 6Ā So the king summoned Jehoiada the chief priest,Ā and said to him, ā€œWhy have you not madeĀ the Levites collectĀ from Judah and Jerusalem the tax authorized by Moses theĀ Lord’s servant and by the assembly of Israel at the tent containing the tablets of the law?ā€Ā 7Ā (Wicked Athaliah and her sons had broken into God’s temple and used all the holy items of theĀ Lord’s temple in their worship of the Baals.)Ā 8Ā The king ordered a chest to be made and placed outside the gate of theĀ Lord’s temple.Ā 9Ā An edict was sent throughout Judah and Jerusalem requiring the people to bring to theĀ LordĀ the tax that Moses, God’s servant, imposed on Israel in the wilderness.Ā 10Ā All the officials and all the people gladly brought their silver and threw it into the chest until it was full.Ā 11Ā Whenever the Levites brought the chest to the royal accountant and they saw there was a lot of silver, the royal scribe and the accountant of the high priest emptied the chest and then took it back to its place. They went through this routine every day and collected a large amount of silver. 12Ā The king and Jehoiada gave it to the construction foremenĀ assigned to theĀ Lord’s temple. They hired carpenters and craftsmen to repair theĀ Lord’s temple, as well as those skilled in working with iron and bronze to restore theĀ Lord’s temple.Ā 13Ā They worked hard and made the repairs.Ā They followed the measurements specified for God’s temple and restored it.Ā 14Ā When they were finished, they brought the rest of the silver to the king and Jehoiada. They used it to make items for theĀ Lord’s temple, including items used in the temple service and for burnt sacrifices, pans, and various other gold and silver items. Throughout Jehoiada’s lifetime, burnt sacrifices were offered regularly in theĀ Lord’s temple. 15Ā Jehoiada grew old and died at the age of 130.Ā 16Ā He was buried in the City of DavidĀ with the kings, because he had accomplished good in Israel and for God and his temple. 17Ā After Jehoiada died, the officials of Judah visited the king and declared their loyalty to him.Ā The king listened to their advice.Ā 18Ā They abandoned the temple of theĀ LordĀ God of their ancestorsĀ and worshipedĀ the Asherah poles and idols. Because of this sinful activity, God was angry with Judah and Jerusalem.Ā 19Ā TheĀ LordĀ sent prophets among them to lead them back to him.Ā They warnedĀ the people, but they would not pay attention.Ā 20Ā God’s Spirit energizedĀ Zechariah son of Jehoiada the priest. He stood up before the people and said to them, ā€œThis is what God says: ā€˜Why are you violating the commands of theĀ Lord? You will not be prosperous. Because you have rejected theĀ Lord, he has rejected you!ā€™ā€Ā 21Ā They plotted against him and by royal decree stoned him to death in the courtyard of theĀ Lord’s temple.Ā 22Ā King Joash disregardedĀ the loyalty Zechariah’s father Jehoiada had shown him and killed Jehoiada’sĀ son. As ZechariahĀ was dying, he said, ā€œMay theĀ LordĀ take notice and seek vengeance!ā€ 23Ā At the beginningĀ of the year the Syrian army attackedĀ JoashĀ and invaded Judah and Jerusalem. They wiped out all the leaders of the people and sent all the plunder they gathered to the king of Damascus.Ā 24Ā Even though the invading Syrian army was relatively weak, theĀ LordĀ handed over to them Judah’s very large army,Ā for the people of JudahĀ had abandoned theĀ LordĀ God of their ancestors. The SyriansĀ gave Joash what he deserved.Ā 25Ā When they withdrew, they left JoashĀ badly wounded. His servants plotted against him because of what he had done toĀ the sonĀ of Jehoiada the priest. They murdered him on his bed. ThusĀ he died and was buried in the City of David,Ā but not in the tombs of the kings.Ā 26Ā The conspirators were Zabad son of Shimeath (an Ammonite woman) and Jehozabad son of Shimrith (a Moabite woman). 27Ā The list of Joash’sĀ sons, the many prophetic oracles about him, and the account of his building project on God’s temple are included in the record of the Scroll of the Kings.Ā His son Amaziah replaced him as king. ## ==šŸ“– Verse-by-Verse Commentary== - coming soon. %% PRIVATE NOTES (only I see this) Write something for each verse Each verse is important. %% ## šŸ¤” Interesting Facts / Historical and Cultural Insights - coming soon. %% PRIVATE NOTES (only I see this) Write down things that are not straight from commentary but interesting facts that ground the text in history. %% ## 🧠 Chapter Summary - coming soon. %% PRIVATE NOTES (only I see this) Write a short paragraph (3–5 sentences) summarizing what happens in this chapter. - What is the main event or teaching? - How does this chapter fit the book’s overall story? - What stands out immediately?
