Biblical Studies Press, 2005) ### Jehoahaz’s Reign 36Ā The people of the land took Jehoahaz son of Josiah and made him king in his father’s place in Jerusalem.Ā 2Ā Jehoahaz was twenty-three years old when he became king, and he reigned three months in Jerusalem.Ā 3Ā The king of Egypt prevented him from ruling in Jerusalem and imposed on the land a special taxĀ of 100 talentsĀ of silver and a talent of gold.Ā 4Ā The king of Egypt made Jehoahaz’sĀ brother Eliakim king over Judah and Jerusalem, and changed his name to Jehoiakim. Necho seized his brother Jehoahaz and took him to Egypt. ### Jehoiakim’s Reign 5Ā Jehoiakim was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned for eleven years in Jerusalem. He did evil in the sight ofĀ theĀ LordĀ his God.Ā 6Ā King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon attacked him,Ā bound him with bronze chains, and carried him awayĀ to Babylon.Ā 7Ā Nebuchadnezzar took some of the items in theĀ Lord’s temple to Babylon and put them in his palaceĀ there. 8Ā The rest of the events of Jehoiakim’s reign, including the horrible sins he committed and his shortcomings, are recorded in the Scroll of the Kings of Israel and Judah.Ā His son Jehoiachin replaced him as king. ### Jehoiachin’s Reign 9Ā Jehoiachin was eighteenĀ years old when he became king, and he reigned three months and ten days in Jerusalem. He did evil in the sight ofĀ theĀ Lord.Ā 10Ā At the beginning of the year King Nebuchadnezzar ordered him to be broughtĀ to Babylon, along with the valuable items in theĀ Lord’s temple. In his place Nebuchadnezzar made Jehoiachin’s relativeĀ Zedekiah king over Judah and Jerusalem. ### Zedekiah’s Reign 11Ā Zedekiah was twenty-one years old when he became king, and he ruled for eleven years in Jerusalem.Ā 12Ā He did evil in the sight ofĀ theĀ LordĀ his God. He did not humble himself before Jeremiah the prophet, theĀ Lord’s spokesman.Ā 13Ā He also rebelled against King Nebuchadnezzar, who had made him vow allegianceĀ in the name of God. He was stubborn and obstinate, and refused to returnĀ to theĀ LordĀ God of Israel.Ā 14Ā All the leaders of the priests and people became more unfaithful and committed the same horrible sins practiced by the nations.Ā They defiled theĀ Lord’s temple which he had consecrated in Jerusalem. ### The Babylonians Destroy Jerusalem 15Ā TheĀ LordĀ God of their ancestorsĀ continually warned them through his messengers,Ā for he felt compassion for his people and his dwelling place.Ā 16Ā But they mocked God’s messengers, despised his warnings,Ā and ridiculed his prophets.Ā Finally theĀ LordĀ got very angry at his people and there was no one who could prevent his judgment.Ā 17Ā He brought against them the king of the Babylonians, who slaughteredĀ their young men in their temple.Ā He did not spareĀ young men or women, or even the old and aging. GodĀ handed everyone over to him.Ā 18Ā He carried away to Babylon all the items in God’s temple, whether large or small, as well as what was in the treasuries of theĀ Lord’s temple and in the treasuries of the king and his officials.Ā 19Ā They burned down God’s temple and tore down the wall of Jerusalem. They burned all its fortified buildings and destroyed all its valuable items.Ā 20Ā He deported to Babylon all who escaped the sword. They served him and his sons until the Persian kingdom rose to power.Ā 21Ā This took place to fulfill theĀ Lord’s message spoken through JeremiahĀ and lasted until the land experiencedĀ its sabbatical years.Ā All the timeĀ of its desolation the land rested in order to fulfill the seventy years. ### Cyrus Allows the Exiles to Go Home 22Ā In the first yearĀ of King Cyrus of Persia, in fulfillment of theĀ Lord’s message spoken through Jeremiah,Ā theĀ LordĀ motivatedĀ King Cyrus of Persia to issue a proclamationĀ throughout his kingdom and also to put it in writing. It read: 23Ā ā€œThis is what King Cyrus of Persia says: ā€˜TheĀ LordĀ God of heaven has given me all the kingdoms of the earth. He has appointed me to build a temple for him in Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Anyone of his people among you may go up there, and may theĀ LordĀ his God be with him.ā€ ## ==šŸ“– Verse-by-Verse Commentary== - coming soon. %% PRIVATE NOTES (only I see this) Write something for each verse Each verse is important. %% ## šŸ¤” Interesting Facts / Historical and Cultural Insights - coming soon. %% PRIVATE NOTES (only I see this) Write down things that are not straight from commentary but interesting facts that ground the text in history. %% ## 🧠 Chapter Summary - coming soon. %% PRIVATE NOTES (only I see this) Write a short paragraph (3–5 sentences) summarizing what happens in this chapter. - What is the main event or teaching? - How does this chapter fit the book’s overall story? - What stands out immediately?
