Biblical Studies Press, 2005) ### The Provision of Manna 16Ā Ā WhenĀ they journeyed from Elim, the entire companyĀ of Israelites came to the wilderness of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after their exodusĀ from the land of Egypt.Ā 2Ā The entire companyĀ of Israelites murmured against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness.Ā 3Ā The Israelites said to them, ā€œIf only we had diedĀ by the hand of theĀ LordĀ in the land of Egypt, when we sat byĀ the pots of meat, when we ate bread to the full,Ā for you have brought us out into this wilderness to killĀ this whole assembly with hunger!ā€ 4Ā Then theĀ LordĀ said to Moses, ā€œI am going to rainĀ bread from heaven for you, and the people will go outĀ and gather the amount for each day, so that I may test them.Ā Will they walk in my lawĀ or not?Ā 5Ā On the sixth dayĀ they will prepare what they bring in, and it will be twice as much as they gather every other day.ā€ 6Ā Moses and Aaron said to all the Israelites, ā€œIn the eveningĀ you will know that theĀ LordĀ has brought you out of the land of Egypt,Ā 7Ā and in the morning you will seeĀ the glory of theĀ Lord, because he has heardĀ your murmurings against theĀ Lord. As for us, what are we,Ā that you should murmur against us?ā€ 8Ā Moses said, ā€œYou will know thisĀ when theĀ LordĀ gives youĀ meat to eat in the evening and bread in the morning to satisfy you, because theĀ LordĀ has heard your murmurings that you are murmuring against him. As for us, what are we?Ā Your murmurings are not against us,Ā but against theĀ Lord.ā€ 9Ā Then Moses said to Aaron, ā€œTell the whole communityĀ of the Israelites, ā€˜ComeĀ before theĀ Lord, because he has heard your murmurings.ā€™ā€ 10Ā As Aaron spokeĀ to the whole community of the Israelites and they looked toward the wilderness, there the glory of theĀ LordĀ appearedĀ in the cloud,Ā 11Ā and theĀ LordĀ spoke to Moses,Ā 12Ā ā€œI have heard the murmurings of the Israelites. Tell them, ā€˜During the eveningĀ you will eat meat,Ā and in the morning you will be satisfiedĀ with bread, so that you may knowĀ that I am theĀ LordĀ your God.ā€™ā€ 13Ā In the evening the quailĀ came up and covered the camp, and in the morning a layer of dew was all around the camp.Ā 14Ā WhenĀ the layer of dew had evaporated,Ā there on the surface of the wilderness was a thin flaky substance,Ā thin like frost on the earth.Ā 15Ā WhenĀ the Israelites saw it, they said to one another,Ā ā€œWhat is it?ā€ because they did not know what it was.Ā Moses said to them, ā€œIt is the breadĀ that theĀ LordĀ has given you for food. 16Ā ā€œThis is whatĀ theĀ LordĀ has commanded:Ā ā€˜Each person is to gatherĀ from it what he can eat, an omerĀ per personĀ according to the numberĀ of your people;Ā each one will pick it upĀ for whoever livesĀ in his tent.ā€™ā€Ā 17Ā The Israelites did so, and they gathered—some more, some less.Ā 18Ā WhenĀ they measured with an omer, the one who gathered much had nothing left over, and the one who gathered little lacked nothing; each one had gathered what he could eat. 19Ā Moses said to them, ā€œNo oneĀ is to keep any of itĀ until morning.ā€Ā 20Ā But they did not listen to Moses; someĀ kept part of it until morning, and it was fullĀ of worms and began to stink, and Moses was angry with them.Ā 21Ā So they gathered it each morning,Ā each person according to what he could eat, and when the sun got hot, it would melt.Ā 22Ā AndĀ on the sixth day they gathered twice as much food, two omersĀ per person;Ā and all the leadersĀ of the communityĀ came and toldĀ Moses.Ā 23Ā He said to them, ā€œThis is what theĀ LordĀ has said: ā€˜Tomorrow is a time of cessation from work,Ā a holy SabbathĀ to theĀ Lord.Ā Whatever you want toĀ bake, bake today;Ā whatever you want to boil, boil today; whatever is left put aside for yourselves to be kept until morning.ā€™ā€ 24Ā So they put it aside until the morning, just as Moses had commanded, and it did not stink, nor were there any worms in it.Ā 25Ā Moses said, ā€œEat it today, for today is a Sabbath to theĀ Lord; today you will not find it in the area.Ā 26Ā Six days you will gather it, but on the seventh day, the Sabbath, there will not be any.ā€ 27Ā On the seventh day some of the people went out to gather it, but they found nothing.Ā 28Ā So theĀ LordĀ said to Moses, ā€œHow long do you refuseĀ to obey my commandments and my instructions?Ā 29Ā See, because theĀ LordĀ has given you the Sabbath, that is whyĀ he is giving you food for two days on the sixth day. Each of you stay where you are;Ā let no oneĀ go out of his place on the seventh day.ā€Ā 30Ā So the people rested on the seventh day. 31Ā The house of IsraelĀ called its name ā€œmanna.ā€Ā It was like coriander seed and was white, and it tastedĀ like wafers with honey. 32Ā Moses said, ā€œThis is whatĀ theĀ LordĀ has commanded: ā€˜Fill an omer with it to be keptĀ for generations to come,Ā so that they may seeĀ the food I fed you in the wilderness when I brought you out from the land of Egypt.ā€™ā€Ā 33Ā Moses said to Aaron, ā€œTake a jar and put in it an omer full of manna, and place it before theĀ LordĀ to be kept for generations to come.ā€Ā 34Ā Just as theĀ LordĀ commanded Moses, so Aaron placed it before the ark of the testimonyĀ for safekeeping. 35Ā Now the Israelites ate manna forty years, until they came to a land that was inhabited; they ate manna until they came to the border of the land of Canaan.Ā 36Ā (Now an omer is one-tenth of an ephah.) ## ==šŸ“– Verse-by-Verse Commentary== - coming soon. %% PRIVATE NOTES (only I see this) Write something for each verse Each verse is important. %% ## šŸ¤” Interesting Facts / Historical and Cultural Insights - coming soon. %% PRIVATE NOTES (only I see this) Write down things that are not straight from commentary but interesting facts that ground the text in history. %% ## 🧠 Chapter Summary - coming soon. %% PRIVATE NOTES (only I see this) Write a short paragraph (3–5 sentences) summarizing what happens in this chapter. - What is the main event or teaching? - How does this chapter fit the book’s overall story? - What stands out immediately?
