### Israel at Sinai
19Ā Ā In the third month after the Israelites went outĀ from the land of Egypt, on the very day,Ā they came to the desert of Sinai.Ā 2Ā After they journeyedĀ from Rephidim, they came to the desert of Sinai, and they camped in the desert; Israel camped there in front of the mountain.
3Ā MosesĀ went up to God, and theĀ LordĀ called to him from the mountain, āThus you will tell the house of Jacob, and declare to the peopleĀ of Israel:Ā 4Ā āYou yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt and how I lifted you on eaglesā wingsĀ and brought you to myself.Ā 5Ā And now, if you will diligently listen to meĀ and keepĀ my covenant, then you will be myĀ special possessionĀ out of all the nations, for all the earth is mine,Ā 6Ā and you will be to meĀ a kingdom of priestsĀ and a holy nation.āĀ These are the words that you will speak to the Israelites.ā
7Ā So Moses came and summoned the elders of Israel. He set before them all these words that theĀ LordĀ had commanded him,Ā 8Ā and all the people answered together, āAll that theĀ LordĀ has commanded we will do!āĀ So Moses brought the words of the people back to theĀ Lord.
9Ā TheĀ LordĀ said to Moses, āI am going to comeĀ to you in a dense cloud,Ā so that the people may hear when I speak with you and so that they will always believe in you.āĀ And Moses told the words of the people to theĀ Lord.
10Ā TheĀ LordĀ said to Moses, āGo to the people and sanctify themĀ today and tomorrow, and make them washĀ their clothesĀ 11Ā and be ready for the third day, for on the third day theĀ LordĀ will come down on Mount Sinai in the sight of all the people.Ā 12Ā You must set boundariesĀ for the people all around, saying, āTake heedĀ to yourselves not to go up on the mountain nor touch its edge. Whoever touches the mountain will surely be put to death!Ā 13Ā No hand will touch himābut he will surely be stoned or shot through, whether a beast or a human being;Ā he must not live.ā When the ramās horn sounds a long blast they mayĀ go up on the mountain.ā
14Ā Then Moses went down from the mountain to the people and sanctified the people, and they washed their clothes.Ā 15Ā He said to the people, āBe ready for the third day. Do not approach your wives for marital relations.ā
16Ā OnĀ the third day in the morning there was thunder and lightning and a denseĀ cloud on the mountain, and the sound of a very loudĀ horn;Ā all the people who were in the camp trembled.Ā 17Ā Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet God, and they took their place at the foot of the mountain.Ā 18Ā Now Mount Sinai was completely covered with smoke because theĀ LordĀ had descended on it in fire, and its smoke went up like the smoke of a great furnace,Ā and the whole mountain shookĀ violently.Ā 19Ā When the sound of the horn grew louder and louder,Ā Moses was speakingĀ and God was answering him with a voice.
20Ā TheĀ LordĀ came down on Mount Sinai, on the top of the mountain, and theĀ LordĀ summoned Moses to the top of the mountain, and Moses went up.Ā 21Ā TheĀ LordĀ said to Moses, āGo down and solemnly warnĀ the people, lest they force their way through to theĀ LordĀ to look, and many of them perish.Ā 22Ā Let the priests also, who approach theĀ Lord, sanctify themselves, lest theĀ LordĀ break throughĀ against them.ā
23Ā Moses said to theĀ Lord, āThe people are not able to come up to Mount Sinai, because you solemnly warned us,Ā āSet boundaries for the mountain and set it apart.āāĀ 24Ā TheĀ LordĀ said to him, āGo, get down, and then come up, and Aaron with you, but do not let the priests and the people force their way through to come up to theĀ Lord, lest he break through against them.āĀ 25Ā So Moses went down to the people and spoke to them.
