But correct the wise,     and they will love you. 9 Instruct the wise,     and they will be even wiser. Teach the righteous,     and they will learn even more. 10 Fear of the Lord is the foundation of wisdom.     Knowledge of the Holy One results in good judgment. 11 Wisdom will multiply your days     and add years to your life. 12 If you become wise, you will be the one to benefit.     If you scorn wisdom, you will be the one to suffer. ### Folly Calls for a Hearing 13 The woman named Folly is brash.     She is ignorant and doesn’t know it. 14 She sits in her doorway     on the heights overlooking the city. 15 She calls out to men going by     who are minding their own business. 16 “Come in with me,” she urges the simple.     To those who lack good judgment, she says, 17 “Stolen water is refreshing;     food eaten in secret tastes the best!” 18 But little do they know that the dead are there.     Her guests are in the depths of the grave. --- ## 📖 Verse-by-Verse Commentary Each verse is important. --- ## 🤔 Interesting Facts - Chapter 9 presents two competing invitations—Wisdom and Folly—both personified as women. - This is the literary conclusion to the first section of Proverbs (chapters 1–9). - The idea that “the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom” is repeated for emphasis (v. 10). - Wisdom’s house has “seven pillars”—a symbol of completeness and divine structure. - Folly is shown as deceptively similar to wisdom, highlighting the need for discernment. --- ## 🧠 Chapter Summary This chapter continues the difference between wisdom and folly. The goal is to show the contrast of their call but the similarity that they both call. Anything Apologetic to point out? - Wisdom is to be sought out. There is nothing wrong with pursing logic. It just needs to be a vehicle to know God, not an end of itself. **Main Teaching**: Proverbs 9 contrasts two invitations—one from Lady Wisdom, who leads to life, and one from Lady Folly, who leads to death. Both call out to the “simple,” but only wisdom offers truth, discipline, and lasting satisfaction. **How It Fits in Proverbs**: This chapter serves as a conclusion to the first section of Proverbs (chapters 1–9), summarizing the fundamental choice between wisdom and folly. It reinforces the high stakes of moral and spiritual decisions. **Apologetic Insight**: Proverbs 9 affirms the existence of moral dualism—right and wrong paths—with eternal consequences. It defends the biblical idea that all people are accountable for the path they choose and challenges the postmodern idea that all truths are equally valid. --- ## 🔎 Key Observations / 🛟 Life Application - 📌 Both wisdom and folly make competing invitations to the simple. - 📌 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. - 📌 Foolishness leads to death, even though it may appear appealing. #### Today, I can apply this chapter by: - ✅ Choose to listen to wise counsel today instead of reacting in pride. - ✅ Reflect on how you’ve responded to correction recently—do you grow from it? - ✅ Be intentional about who you allow to influence your thinking and decisions. - ✅ Avoid mocking or criticizing others; speak with humility and grace. - ✅ Walk in the fear of the Lord by respecting His Word above your opinions. --- ## ✍️ Key Verses to Remember **📖 Proverbs 9:10** “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” - **Why it matters**: Repeating and reinforcing Proverbs 1:7, this verse emphasizes that true wisdom always begins with reverent awe of God. --- ## 🔗 Related Passages - 🔗 Deuteronomy 30:19 – “I have set before you life and death… now choose life.” - 🔗 Matthew 7:13–14 – “Enter through the narrow gate… but small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life.” - 🔗 Psalm 1:1–2 – “Blessed is the one… whose delight is in the law of the Lord.” --- ## 🙏 Devotional Reflection Write 3–6 sentences reflecting on: - How this chapter encourages your faith, - Convicts your heart, - Reveals God's character.
