Biblical Studies Press, 2005) ### Isaiah’s Commission [[#Verse 01.]] In the year of King Uzziah’s death, I saw the Lord seated on a high, elevated throne. The hem of his robe filled the temple.  [[#Verse 02.]] Seraphs stood over him; each one had six wings. With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and they used the remaining two to fly.  [[#Verse 03.]] They called out to one another, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of Heaven’s Armies! His majestic splendor fills the entire earth!” [[#Verse 04.]] The sound of their voices shook the door frames, and the temple was filled with smoke. [[#Verse 05.]] I said, “Woe to me! I am destroyed, for my lips are contaminated by sin, and I live among people whose lips are contaminated by sin. My eyes have seen the king, the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.”  [[#Verse 06.]] But then one of the seraphs flew toward me. In his hand was a hot coal he had taken from the altar with tongs.  [[#Verse 07.]] He touched my mouth with it and said, “Look, this coal has touched your lips. Your evil is removed; your sin is forgiven.”  [[#Verse 08.]] I heard the voice of the Lord say, “Whom will I send? Who will go on our behalf?” I answered, “Here I am, send me!”  [[#Verse 09.]] He said, “Go and tell these people: “‘Listen continually, but don’t understand. Look continually, but don’t perceive.’ [[#Verse 10.]] Make the hearts of these people calloused; make their ears deaf and their eyes blind. Otherwise they might see with their eyes and hear with their ears, their hearts might understand and they might repent and be healed.” [[#Verse 11.]] I replied, “How long, Lord?” He said, “Until cities are in ruins and unpopulated, and houses are uninhabited, and the land is ruined and devastated, [[#Verse 12.]] and the Lord has sent the people off to a distant place, and the very heart of the land is completely abandoned. [[#Verse 13.]] Even if only a tenth of the people remain in the land, it will again be destroyed, like one of the large sacred trees or an Asherah pole, when a sacred pillar on a high place is thrown down. That sacred pillar symbolizes the special chosen family.” ## ==📖 Verse-by-Verse Commentary== ###### Overall. - The first nine verses serve as Isaiah's calling and is a great example of how God calls us all. We get a big vision of God and then share it with the world. ###### Verse 01. - Uzziah had been king for over 50 years. For many people, that was the only king they had ever known. Under his rule, they experienced prosperity. It was only at the end of his reign that things began to decline, and it was mainly due to his personal character. - Seeing the Lord exalted is a reminder that God is still on the throne, reigning over all. He has not impacted any event on Earth, no matter how Earth-shattering. - The "hem of His robe" is a symbol of His greatness. There was a legend that kings of the time would take the robes of their conquered kings and add them to their own. A long robe was a symbol of authority. His robe filling the Earth means nothing is outside His authority. ###### Verse 02. - Seraphs- type of angel. - Covering parts of their bodies is a symbol of honor and respect. ###### Verse 03. - In the Bible, repeating something gave it extra attention. When something was said three times, it was the same as shouting it as loudly as they could. They were saying, "Look at holy (sacredly different) He is." ###### Verse 04. - "Smoke"- a symbol that goes back to the incense altar just outside the holy of holies that continually offered incense before the Lord. Also, a symbol from Exodus 19. ###### Verse 05. - When Isaiah encountered the presence of God, he was immediately struck by how out of place He was in this holy place. God was so far above himself. This is a correct posture when we truly see the Lord. ###### Verse 06. - Symbolizing the brazen altar where the sacrifices were performed. - It was considered holy. ###### Verse 07. - When something holy touches something else, it makes that thing holy. The holiness passes on to it. ###### Verse 08. - Isaiah goes from feeling lost and confused to feeling full of courage. He is ready to go and tell the world what he has experienced. ###### Verse 09. - God commissions Isaiah to go and declare His words to the people. Notice, these first words of prophecy are not for future events to expose what is happening at the moment. This is an example of two different types of prophecy. One type of prophecy is to speak of future events. The other type is to speak the truth.
