Biblical Studies Press, 2005) ### An Object Lesson from Ruined Linen Shorts [[#Verse 01.]]Ā TheĀ LordĀ said to me, ā€œGo and buy some linen shortsĀ and put them on.Ā Do not put them in water.ā€Ā  [[#Verse 02.]]Ā So I bought the shorts in keeping with theĀ Lord’s instructionsĀ and put them on.Ā  [[#Verse 03.]]Ā Then theĀ Lord’s message came to me again,Ā  [[#Verse 04.]]Ā ā€œTake the shorts that you bought and are wearingĀ and go at onceĀ to Perath.Ā Bury the shorts thereĀ in a crack in the rocks.ā€Ā  [[#Verse 05.]]Ā So I went and buried them at PerathĀ as theĀ LordĀ had ordered me to do. [[#Verse 06.]]Ā Many days later theĀ LordĀ said to me, ā€œGo at once to Perath and getĀ the shorts I ordered you to bury there.ā€Ā  [[#Verse 07.]]Ā So I went to Perath and dug upĀ the shorts from the place where I had buried them. I foundĀ that they were ruined; they were good for nothing. [[#Verse 08.]]Ā Then theĀ Lord’s message came to me,Ā  [[#Verse 09.]]Ā ā€œI, theĀ Lord, say:Ā ā€˜This shows howĀ I will ruin the highly exalted positionĀ in which Judah and Jerusalem take pride. [[#Verse 10.]]Ā These wicked people refuse to obey what I have said.Ā They follow the stubborn inclinations of their own hearts and pay allegianceĀ to other gods by worshiping and serving them. SoĀ they will become just like these linen shorts that are good for nothing.Ā  [[#Verse 11.]]Ā For,’ I say,Ā ā€˜just as shorts cling tightly to a person’s body, so I bound the whole nation of Israel and the whole nation of JudahĀ tightlyĀ to me.’ I intended for them to be my special people and to bring me fame, honor, and praise.Ā But they would not obey me. [[#Verse 12.]]Ā ā€œSo tell them,Ā ā€˜TheĀ Lord, the God of Israel, says: ā€œEvery wine jar is made to be filled with wine.ā€ā€™Ā And they will probably say to you, ā€˜Do you not think we knowĀ that every wine jar is supposed to be filled with wine?’  [[#Verse 13.]]Ā ThenĀ tell them, ā€˜TheĀ LordĀ says: ā€œI will soon fill all the people who live in this land with stupor.Ā I will also fill the kings from David’s dynasty,Ā the priests, the prophets, and the citizens of Jerusalem with stupor.Ā  [[#Verse 14.]]Ā And I will smash them like wine bottles against one another, children and parents alike.Ā I will not show any pity, mercy, or compassion. Nothing will keep me from destroying them,’ says theĀ Lord.ā€ [[#Verse 15.]]Ā Then I said to the people of Judah: ā€œListen and pay attention! Do not be arrogant! For theĀ LordĀ has spoken. [[#Verse 16.]]Ā Show theĀ LordĀ your God the respect that is due him. Do it before he brings the darkness of disaster. Do it before you stumbleĀ into distress like a traveler on the mountains at twilight. Do it before he turns the light of deliverance you hope for into the darkness and gloom of exile. [[#Verse 17.]]Ā But if you will not pay attention to this warning, I will weep alone because of your arrogant pride. I will weep bitterly, and my eyes will overflow with tears because you, theĀ Lord’s flock,Ā will be carried into exile.ā€ [[#Verse 18.]]Ā TheĀ LordĀ told me: ā€œTell the king and the queen mother, ā€˜Surrender your thrones, for your glorious crowns will be removedĀ from your heads. [[#Verse 19.]]Ā The gates of the towns in southern Judah will be shut tight. No one will be able to go in or out of them. All Judah will be carried off into exile. They will be completely carried off into exile.ā€™ā€ [[#Verse 20.]]Ā Then I said, ā€œLook up, Jerusalem,Ā and see the enemyĀ that is coming from the north. Where now is the flock of people that were entrusted to your care? Where now are the ā€˜sheep’ that you take such pride in? [[#Verse 21.]]Ā What will you sayĀ when theĀ LordĀ appoints as rulers over you those allies that you, yourself, had actually prepared as such? Then anguish and agony will grip you like that of a woman giving birth to a baby. [[#Verse 22.]]Ā You will probably ask yourself, ā€˜Why have these things happened to me? Why have I been treated like a disgraced adulteress whose skirt has been torn off and her limbs exposed?’ It is because you have sinned so much. [[#Verse 23.]]Ā But there is little hope for you ever doing good, you who are so accustomed to doing evil. Can an EthiopianĀ change the color of his skin? Can a leopard remove its spots? [[#Verse 24.]]Ā ā€œTheĀ LordĀ says, ā€˜That is why I will scatter your peopleĀ like chaff that is blown away by a desert wind. [[#Verse 25.]]Ā This is your fate, the destiny to which I have appointed you, because you have forgotten me and have trusted in false gods. [[#Verse 26.]]Ā So I will pull your skirt up over your face and expose you to shame like a disgraced adulteress! [[#Verse 27.]]Ā People of Jerusalem,Ā I have seen your adulterous worship, your shameless prostitution to, and your lustful pursuit of, other gods. I have seen your disgusting acts of worship on the hills throughout the countryside. You are doomed to destruction! How long will you continue to be unclean?ā€™ā€ ## ==šŸ“– Verse-by-Verse Commentary== ###### Overall. ###### Verse 01. ###### Verse 02. ###### Verse 03. ###### Verse 04. ###### Verse 05. ###### Verse 06. ###### Verse 07. ###### Verse 08. ###### Verse 09. ###### Verse 10. ###### Verse 11. ###### Verse 12. ###### Verse 13. ###### Verse 14. ###### Verse 15. ###### Verse 16. ###### Verse 17. ###### Verse 18. ###### Verse 19. ###### Verse 20. ###### Verse 21. ###### Verse 22. ###### Verse 23. ###### Verse 24. ###### Verse 25. ###### Verse 26. ###### Verse 27. ## šŸ¤” Interesting Facts / Historical and Cultural Insights - coming soon. %% PRIVATE NOTES (only I see this) Write down things that are not straight from commentary but interesting facts that ground the text in history. %% ## 🧠 Chapter Summary - coming soon. %% PRIVATE NOTES (only I see this) Write a short paragraph (3–5 sentences) summarizing what happens in this chapter. - What is the main event or teaching? - How does this chapter fit the book’s overall story? - What stands out immediately?
