Biblical Studies Press, 2005) ### New Leaders over a Regathered Remnant [[#Verse 01.]]Ā TheĀ LordĀ says,Ā ā€œThe leaders of my people are sure to be judged.Ā They were supposed to watch over my people like shepherds watch over their sheep. But they are causing my people to be destroyed and scattered.ā€Ā  [[#Verse 02.]]Ā So theĀ LordĀ God of Israel has this to say about the leaders who are ruling over his people: ā€œYou have caused my peopleĀ to be dispersed and driven into exile. You have not taken care of them. So I will punish you for the evil that you have done.Ā I, theĀ Lord, affirm it!Ā  [[#Verse 03.]]Ā Then I myself will regather those of my peopleĀ who are still alive from all the countries where I have driven them. I will bring them back to their homeland.Ā They will greatly increase in number. [[#Verse 04.]]Ā I will install rulersĀ over them who will care for them. Then they will no longer need to fear or be terrified. None of them will turn up missing.Ā I, theĀ Lord, promise it! [[#Verse 05.]]Ā ā€œI, theĀ Lord, promiseĀ that a new time will certainly come when I will raise up for them a righteous branch,Ā a descendant of David. He will rule over them with wisdom and understanding and will do what is just and right in the land. [[#Verse 06.]]Ā Under his ruleĀ Judah will enjoy safety and Israel will live in security. This is the name he will go by: ā€˜TheĀ LordĀ has provided us with justice.’ [[#Verse 07.]]Ā ā€œSo I, theĀ Lord, say:Ā ā€˜A new time will certainly come.Ā People now affirm their oaths with, ā€œI swear as surely as theĀ LordĀ lives who delivered the people of Israel out of Egypt.ā€Ā  [[#Verse 08.]]Ā But at that time they will affirm them with, ā€œI swear as surely as theĀ LordĀ lives who delivered the descendants of the former nation of IsraelĀ from the land of the north and from all the other lands where he had banishedĀ them.ā€Ā At that time they will live in their own land.ā€™ā€ ### Oracles Against the False Prophets [[#Verse 09.]]Ā Here is what theĀ LordĀ says concerning the false prophets: My heart and my mind are deeply disturbed. I tremble all over. I am like a drunk person, like a person who has had too much wine, because of the way theĀ Lord and his holy word are being mistreated. [[#Verse 10.]]Ā For the land is full of people unfaithful to him. They live wicked lives and they misuse their power. So the land is dried upĀ because it is under his curse. The pastures in the wilderness are withered. [[#Verse 11.]]Ā Moreover,Ā theĀ LordĀ says, ā€œBoth the prophets and priests are godless. I have even found them doing evil in my temple. [[#Verse 12.]]Ā So the paths they follow will be dark and slippery. They will stumble and fall headlong. For I will bring disaster on them. A day of reckoning is coming for them.ā€ TheĀ LordĀ affirms it! [[#Verse 13.]]Ā TheĀ LordĀ says,Ā ā€œI saw the prophets of Samaria doing something that was disgusting. They prophesied in the name of the god Baal and led my people Israel astray. [[#Verse 14.]]Ā But I see the prophets of Jerusalem doing something just as shocking. They are unfaithful to me and continually prophesy lies. So they give encouragement to people who are doing evil, with the result that they do not stop their evildoing. I consider all of them as bad as the people of Sodom, and the citizens of Jerusalem as bad as the people of Gomorrah. [[#Verse 15.]]Ā So then I, theĀ LordĀ of Heaven’s Armies, have something to say concerning the prophets of Jerusalem: ā€˜I will make these prophets eat the bitter food of suffering and drink the poison water of judgment. For the prophets of Jerusalem are the reason that ungodlinessĀ has spread throughout the land.ā€™ā€ [[#Verse 16.]]Ā TheĀ LordĀ of Heaven’s ArmiesĀ says to the people of Jerusalem: ā€œDo not listen to what those prophets are saying to you. They are filling you with false hopes. They are reporting visions of their own imaginations, not something theĀ LordĀ has given them to say. [[#Verse 17.]]Ā They continually sayĀ to those who reject what theĀ LordĀ has said, ā€˜Things will go well for you!’ They say to all those who follow the stubborn inclinations of their own hearts, ā€˜Nothing bad will happen to you!’ [[#Verse 18.]]Ā Yet which of them has ever stood in theĀ Lord’s inner circle so theyĀ could see and hear what he has to say? Which of them have ever paid attention or listened to what he has said? [[#Verse 19.]]Ā But just watch!Ā The wrath of theĀ Lord will come like a storm! Like a raging storm it will rage down on the heads of those who are wicked. [[#Verse 20.]]Ā The anger of theĀ LordĀ will not turn back until he has fully carried out his intended purposes. In future days you people will come to understand this clearly. [[#Verse 21.]]Ā I did not send those prophets, yet they were in a hurry to give their message. I did not tell them anything, yet they prophesied anyway. [[#Verse 22.]]Ā But if they had stood in my inner circle, they would have proclaimed my message to my people. They would have caused my people to turn from their wicked ways and stop doing the evil things they are doing. [[#Verse 23.]]Ā Do you people thinkĀ that I am some local deity and not the transcendent God?ā€Ā theĀ LordĀ asks. [[#Verse 24.]]Ā ā€œDo you really think anyone can hide himself where I cannot see him?ā€ theĀ LordĀ asks. ā€œDo you not know that I am everywhere?ā€ theĀ LordĀ asks. [[#Verse 25.]]Ā TheĀ LordĀ says,Ā ā€œI have heard what those prophets who are prophesying lies in my name are saying. They are saying, ā€˜I have had a dream! I have had a dream!’  [[#Verse 26.]]Ā Those prophets are just prophesying lies. They are prophesying the delusions of their own minds.Ā  [[#Verse 27.]]Ā How long will they go on plottingĀ to make my people forget who I amĀ through the dreams they tell one another? That is just as bad as what their ancestorsĀ did when they forgot who I am by worshiping the god Baal.Ā  [[#Verse 28.]]Ā Let the prophet who has had a dream go ahead and tell his dream. Let the person who has received my message report that message faithfully. What is like straw cannot compare to what is like grain!Ā I, theĀ Lord, affirm it!Ā  [[#Verse 29.]]Ā My message is like a fire that purges dross.Ā It is like a hammer that breaks a rock in pieces.Ā I, theĀ Lord, so affirm it!Ā  [[#Verse 30.]]Ā So I, theĀ Lord, affirmĀ that I am opposed to those prophets who steal messages from one another that they claim are from me.Ā  [[#Verse 31.]]Ā I, theĀ Lord, affirmĀ that I am opposed to those prophets who are using their own tongues to declare, ā€˜TheĀ LordĀ declares.’  [[#Verse 32.]]Ā I, theĀ Lord, affirmĀ that I am opposed to those prophets who dream up lies and report them. They are misleading my people with their reckless lies.Ā I did not send them. I did not commission them. They are not helping these people at all.Ā I, theĀ Lord, affirm it!ā€ [[#Verse 33.]]Ā TheĀ LordĀ said to me, ā€œJeremiah,Ā when one of these people, or a prophet, or a priest asks you, ā€˜What burdensome messageĀ do you have from theĀ Lord?’ Tell them, ā€˜You are the burden,Ā and I will cast you away.Ā I, theĀ Lord, affirm it!Ā  [[#Verse 34.]]Ā I will punish any prophet, priest, or other person who says ā€œTheĀ Lord’s message is burdensome.ā€Ā I will punish both that person and his whole family.ā€™ā€ [[#Verse 35.]]Ā So I, Jeremiah, tell you,Ā ā€œEach of you people should say to his friend or his relative, ā€˜How did theĀ LordĀ answer? Or what did theĀ LordĀ say?’  [[#Verse 36.]]Ā You must no longer say that theĀ Lord’s message is burdensome.Ā For what is ā€˜burdensome’ really pertains to what a person himself says.Ā You are misrepresentingĀ the words of our God, the living God, theĀ LordĀ of Heaven’s Armies.Ā  [[#Verse 37.]]Ā Each of you should merely ask the prophet, ā€˜What answer did theĀ LordĀ give you? Or what did theĀ LordĀ say?’  [[#Verse 38.]]Ā But just suppose you continue to say, ā€˜The message of theĀ LordĀ is burdensome.’ Here is what theĀ LordĀ says will happen: ā€˜I sent word to you that you must not say, ā€œTheĀ Lord’s message is burdensome.ā€ But you used the words, ā€œTheĀ Lord’s message is burdensome,ā€ anyway.Ā  [[#Verse 39.]]Ā SoĀ I will carry you far offĀ and throw you away. I will send both you and the city I gave to you and to your ancestors out of my sight. [[#Verse 40.]]Ā I will bring on you lasting shame and lasting disgrace that will never be forgotten!ā€™ā€ ## ==šŸ“– Verse-by-Verse Commentary== ###### Overall. ###### Verse 01. ###### Verse 02. ###### Verse 03. ###### Verse 04. ###### Verse 05. ###### Verse 06. ###### Verse 07. ###### Verse 08. ###### Verse 09. ###### Verse 10. ###### Verse 11. ###### Verse 12. ###### Verse 13. ###### Verse 14. ###### Verse 15. ###### Verse 16. ###### Verse 17. ###### Verse 18. ###### Verse 19. ###### Verse 20. ###### Verse 21. ###### Verse 22. ###### Verse 23. ###### Verse 24. ###### Verse 25. ###### Verse 26. ###### Verse 27. ###### Verse 28. ###### Verse 29. ###### Verse 30. ###### Verse 31. ###### Verse 32. ###### Verse 33. ###### Verse 34. ###### Verse 35. ###### Verse 36. ###### Verse 37. ###### Verse 38. ###### Verse 39. ###### Verse 40. ## šŸ¤” Interesting Facts / Historical and Cultural Insights - coming soon. %% PRIVATE NOTES (only I see this) Write down things that are not straight from commentary but interesting facts that ground the text in history. %% ## 🧠 Chapter Summary - coming soon. %% PRIVATE NOTES (only I see this) Write a short paragraph (3–5 sentences) summarizing what happens in this chapter. - What is the main event or teaching? - How does this chapter fit the book’s overall story? - What stands out immediately?
