### Jeremiah Confronted by a False Prophet
[[#Verse 01.]]Ā The following events occurred in that same year, early in the reign of King Zedekiah of Judah. To be more precise, it was the fifth month of the fourth year of his reign.Ā The prophet Hananiah son of Azzur, who was from Gibeon, spoke to JeremiahĀ in theĀ Lordās temple in the presence of the priests and all the people:Ā
[[#Verse 02.]]Ā āTheĀ LordĀ of Heavenās Armies, the God of Israel,Ā says, āI will break the yoke of servitudeĀ to the king of Babylon.
[[#Verse 03.]]Ā Before two years are over, I will bring back to this place everything that King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon took from it and carried away to Babylon.Ā
[[#Verse 04.]]Ā I will also bring back to this place Jehoiakimās son King Jeconiah of Judah and all the exiles who were taken to Babylon.ā Indeed, theĀ LordĀ affirms,Ā āI will break the yoke of servitude to the king of Babylon.āā
[[#Verse 05.]]Ā Then the prophet Jeremiah responded to the prophet Hananiah in the presence of the priests and all the people who were standing in theĀ Lordās temple.Ā
[[#Verse 06.]]Ā The prophet Jeremiah said, āAmen! May theĀ LordĀ do all this! May theĀ LordĀ make your prophecy come true! May he bring back to this place from Babylon all the valuable articles taken from theĀ Lordās temple and the people who were carried into exile.Ā
[[#Verse 07.]]Ā But listen to what I say to you and to all these people.
[[#Verse 08.]]Ā From earliest times, the prophets who preceded you and me invariablyĀ prophesied war, disaster,Ā and plagues against many countries and great kingdoms.Ā
[[#Verse 09.]]Ā So if a prophet prophesiedĀ peace and prosperity, it was only known that theĀ LordĀ truly sent him when what he prophesied came true.ā
[[#Verse 10.]]Ā The prophet Hananiah then took the yoke off the prophet Jeremiahās neck and broke it.Ā
[[#Verse 11.]]Ā Then he spoke up in the presence of all the people. āTheĀ LordĀ says, āIn the same way I will break the yoke of servitude of all the nations to King Nebuchadnezzar of BabylonĀ before two years are over.āā After he heard this, the prophet Jeremiah departed and went on his way.
[[#Verse 12.]]Ā But shortly after the prophet Hananiah had broken the yoke off the prophet Jeremiahās neck, theĀ Lordās message came to Jeremiah.Ā
[[#Verse 13.]]Ā āGo and tell Hananiah that theĀ LordĀ says,Ā āYou have indeed broken the wooden yoke. But you haveĀ only succeeded in replacing it with an iron one!Ā
[[#Verse 14.]]Ā For theĀ LordĀ of Heavenās Armies, the God of Israel,Ā says, āI have put an irresistible yoke of servitude on all these nationsĀ so they will serve King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon. And they will indeed serve him. I have even given him control over the wild animals.āāā
[[#Verse 15.]]Ā Then the prophet Jeremiah told the prophet Hananiah, āListen, Hananiah! TheĀ LordĀ did not send you! You are making these people trust in a lie.Ā
[[#Verse 16.]]Ā So theĀ LordĀ says, āI will most assuredly removeĀ you from the face of the earth. You will die this very year because you have counseled rebellion against theĀ Lord.āā
[[#Verse 17.]]Ā In the seventh month of that very same yearĀ the prophet Hananiah died.
