Biblical Studies Press, 2005) ### Introduction [[#Verse 01.]]Ā On the first day of the sixth monthĀ of King Darius’ second year, theĀ Lord’s message came throughĀ the prophet Haggai to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to the high priest Joshua son of Jehozadak: ### The Accusation of Indifference Against the People [[#Verse 02.]]Ā This is what theĀ LordĀ of Heaven’s ArmiesĀ has said: ā€œThese people have said, ā€˜The time for rebuilding theĀ Lord’s temple has not yet come.ā€™ā€Ā  [[#Verse 03.]]Ā TheĀ Lord’s message came through the prophet Haggai as follows: [[#Verse 04.]]Ā ā€œIs it right for you to live in richly paneled housesĀ while my temple is in ruins?Ā  [[#Verse 05.]]Ā Here then, this is what theĀ LordĀ of Heaven’s Armies has said: ā€˜Think carefully about what you are doing.Ā  [[#Verse 06.]]Ā You have planted much, but have harvested little. You eat, but are never filled. You drink, but are still thirsty. You put on clothes, but are not warm. Those who earn wages end up with holes in their money bags.ā€™ā€ ### Consequences of the Failure to Rebuild the Temple [[#Verse 07.]]Ā Moreover, this is what theĀ LordĀ of Heaven’s Armies has said: ā€œPay close attention to these things also.Ā  [[#Verse 08.]]Ā Go up to the hill country and bring back timber to buildĀ the temple.Ā Then I will be pleased and honored,ā€Ā says theĀ Lord. [[#Verse 09.]]Ā ā€œYou expected a large harvest, but instead there was little.Ā And when you would bring it home, I would blow it right away.Ā Why?ā€ asks theĀ LordĀ of Heaven’s Armies. ā€œBecause my temple remains in ruins, thanks to each of you favoring his own house!Ā  [[#Verse 10.]]Ā This is why the skyĀ has held back its dew and the earth its produce.Ā  [[#Verse 11.]]Ā Moreover, I have called for a drought that will affect the fields, the hill country, the grain, new wine, fresh olive oil, and everything that grows from the ground; it also will harm people, animals, and everything they produce.ā€ ### The Response of the Leaders and the People [[#Verse 12.]]Ā Then Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel and the high priest Joshua son of Jehozadak,Ā along with the whole remnant of the people,Ā obeyedĀ theĀ LordĀ their God. They responded favorably to the message of the prophet Haggai, who spoke just as theĀ LordĀ their God had instructed him,Ā and the people began to respect theĀ Lord.Ā  [[#Verse 13.]]Ā Then Haggai, theĀ Lord’s messenger, spoke theĀ Lord’s announcement to the people:Ā ā€œI am with you,ā€ decrees theĀ Lord.Ā  [[#Verse 14.]]Ā So theĀ LordĀ energized and encouragedĀ ZerubbabelĀ son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, the high priest Joshua son of Jehozadak,Ā and the whole remnant of the people.Ā They came and worked on the temple of their God, theĀ LordĀ of Heaven’s Armies.Ā  [[#Verse 15.]]Ā This took place on the twenty-fourth day of the sixth month of King Darius’ second year. ## ==šŸ“– Verse-by-Verse Commentary== ###### Overall. ###### Verse 01. ###### Verse 02. ###### Verse 03. ###### Verse 04. ###### Verse 05. ###### Verse 06. ###### Verse 07. ###### Verse 08. ###### Verse 09. ###### Verse 10. ###### Verse 11. ###### Verse 12. ###### Verse 13. ###### Verse 14. ###### Verse 15. ## šŸ¤” Interesting Facts / Historical and Cultural Insights - coming soon. %% PRIVATE NOTES (only I see this) Write down things that are not straight from commentary but interesting facts that ground the text in history. %% ## 🧠 Chapter Summary - coming soon. %% PRIVATE NOTES (only I see this) Write a short paragraph (3–5 sentences) summarizing what happens in this chapter. - What is the main event or teaching? - How does this chapter fit the book’s overall story? - What stands out immediately?
