Biblical Studies Press, 2005) ### The Glory to Come [[#Verse 01.]]Ā On the twenty-first day of the seventh month,Ā theĀ Lord’s message came throughĀ the prophet Haggai again:Ā  [[#Verse 02.]]Ā ā€œAsk the following questions toĀ Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, the high priest Joshua son of Jehozadak,Ā and the remnant of the people:Ā  [[#Verse 03.]]Ā ā€˜Who among you survivors saw the former splendor of this temple?Ā How does it look to you now? Isn’t it nothing by comparison?’  [[#Verse 04.]]Ā Even so, take heart, Zerubbabel,ā€ decrees theĀ Lord. ā€œTake heart, Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest. And take heart all you citizens of the land,ā€Ā decrees theĀ Lord, ā€œand begin to work. For I am with you,ā€ decrees theĀ LordĀ of Heaven’s Armies.Ā  [[#Verse 05.]]Ā ā€œDo not fear, because I made a promise to your ancestors when they left Egypt, and my SpiritĀ even now testifies to you.ā€Ā  [[#Verse 06.]]Ā Moreover, this is what theĀ LordĀ of Heaven’s Armies has said: ā€œIn just a little whileĀ I will once again shake the skyĀ and the earth, the sea and the dry ground.Ā  [[#Verse 07.]]Ā I will also shake up all the nations, and theyĀ will offer their treasures;Ā then I will fill this temple with glory.ā€ So theĀ LordĀ of Heaven’s Armies has said.Ā  [[#Verse 08.]]Ā ā€œThe silver and gold will be mine,ā€ decrees theĀ LordĀ of Heaven’s Armies.Ā  [[#Verse 09.]]Ā ā€œThe future splendor of this temple will be greater than that of former times,ā€Ā theĀ LordĀ of Heaven’s Armies has declared. ā€œAnd in this place I will give peace,ā€ decrees theĀ LordĀ of Heaven’s Armies. ### The Promised Blessing [[#Verse 10.]]Ā On the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month of Darius’ second year,Ā theĀ Lord’s message came to the prophet Haggai:Ā  [[#Verse 11.]]Ā ā€œThis is what theĀ LordĀ of Heaven’s Armies has said, ā€˜Ask the priests about the law.Ā  [[#Verse 12.]]Ā If someone carries holy meat in a fold of his garment and that fold touches bread, a boiled dish, wine, olive oil, or any other food, will that item become holy?ā€™ā€Ā The priests answered, ā€œIt will not.ā€Ā  [[#Verse 13.]]Ā Then Haggai asked, ā€œIf a person who is ritually unclean because of touching a dead bodyĀ comes in contact with one of these items, will it become unclean?ā€ The priests answered, ā€œIt will be unclean.ā€ [[#Verse 14.]]Ā Then Haggai responded, ā€œā€˜The people of this nation are unclean in my sight,’ decrees theĀ Lord. ā€˜And so is all their effort; everything they offer is also unclean.Ā  [[#Verse 15.]]Ā Now therefore reflect carefully on the recent past,Ā before one stone was laid on another in theĀ Lord’s temple.Ā  [[#Verse 16.]]Ā From that timeĀ when one came expecting a heap of twenty measures, there were only ten; when one came to the wine vat to draw out fifty measures from it, there were only twenty.Ā  [[#Verse 17.]]Ā I struck all the products of your laborĀ with blight, disease, and hail, and yet you brought nothing to me,’ says theĀ Lord.Ā  [[#Verse 18.]]Ā ā€˜Think carefullyĀ about the past: from today, the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month,Ā to the day work on the temple of theĀ LordĀ was resumed,Ā think about it.Ā  [[#Verse 19.]]Ā The seed is still in the storehouse, isn’t it? And the vine, fig tree, pomegranate, and olive tree have not produced. Nevertheless, from today on I will bless you.ā€™ā€ ### Zerubbabel the Chosen One [[#Verse 20.]]Ā Then theĀ LordĀ spoke to HaggaiĀ a second time on the twenty-fourth day of the month:Ā  [[#Verse 21.]]Ā ā€œTell Zerubbabel governor of Judah: ā€˜I am readyĀ to shake the skyĀ and the earth.Ā  [[#Verse 22.]]Ā I will overthrow royal thrones and shatter the might of earthly kingdoms.Ā I will overthrow chariots and those who ride them, and horses and their riders will fall as people kill one another.Ā  [[#Verse 23.]]Ā On that day,’ says theĀ LordĀ of Heaven’s Armies, ā€˜I will take you, Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, my servant,’ says theĀ Lord, ā€˜and I will make you like a signet ring,Ā for I have chosen you,’ says theĀ LordĀ of Heaven’s Armies.ā€ ## ==šŸ“– Verse-by-Verse Commentary== ###### Overall. ###### Verse 01. ###### Verse 02. ###### Verse 03. ###### Verse 04. ###### Verse 05. ###### Verse 06. ###### Verse 07. ###### Verse 08. ###### Verse 09. ###### Verse 10. ###### Verse 11. ###### Verse 12. ###### Verse 13. ###### Verse 14. ###### Verse 15. ###### Verse 16. ###### Verse 17. ###### Verse 18. ###### Verse 19. ###### Verse 20. ###### Verse 21. ###### Verse 22. ###### Verse 23. ## šŸ¤” Interesting Facts / Historical and Cultural Insights - coming soon. %% PRIVATE NOTES (only I see this) Write down things that are not straight from commentary but interesting facts that ground the text in history. %% ## 🧠 Chapter Summary - coming soon. %% PRIVATE NOTES (only I see this) Write a short paragraph (3–5 sentences) summarizing what happens in this chapter. - What is the main event or teaching? - How does this chapter fit the book’s overall story? - What stands out immediately?
