## š Scripture Text (NET)
āI am about to send my messenger,Ā who will clear the way before me. Indeed, the LordĀ you are seeking will suddenly come to his temple, and the messengerĀ of the covenant, whom you long for, is certainly coming,ā says theĀ LordĀ of Heavenās Armies.
Who can endure the day of his coming? Who can keep standing when he appears? For he will be like a refinerās fire,Ā like a laundererās soap.Ā He will act like a refiner and purifier of silver and will cleanse the Levites and refine them like gold and silver. Then they will offer theĀ LordĀ a proper offering.Ā The offeringsĀ of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to theĀ LordĀ as in former times and years past. [^1]
āIĀ will come to you in judgment. I will be quick to testify against those who practice divination; those who commit adultery; those who break promises;Ā and those who exploit workers, widows, and orphans,Ā who refuse to helpĀ the resident foreignerĀ and in this way show they do not fear me,ā says theĀ LordĀ of Heavenās Armies.
### Resistance to the Lord through Selfishness
āSince, I, theĀ Lord, do not go back on my promises,Ā you, sons of Jacob, have not perished.Ā From the days of your ancestors you have ignoredĀ my commandmentsĀ and have not kept them. Return to me, and I will return to you,ā says theĀ LordĀ of Heavenās Armies. āBut you say, āHow should we return?āĀ Can a person robĀ God? You are indeed robbing me, but you say, āHow are we robbing you?ā In tithes and contributions!Ā You are bound for judgmentĀ because you are robbing meāthis whole nation is guilty.
āBring the entire tithe into the storehouseĀ so that there may be food in my temple. Test me in this matter,ā says theĀ LordĀ of Heavenās Armies, āto see if I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out blessing for you until there is no room for it all.Ā Then I will stop the plagueĀ from ruining your crops,Ā and the vine will not lose its fruit before harvest,ā says theĀ LordĀ of Heavenās Armies.Ā āAll nations will call you blessed, for you indeed will live inĀ a delightful land,ā says theĀ LordĀ of Heavenās Armies.
### Resistance to the Lord through Self-sufficiency
āYou have criticized me sharply,āĀ says theĀ Lord, ābut you ask, āHow have we criticized you?āĀ You have said, āIt is useless to serve God. How have we been helpedĀ by keeping his requirements and going about like mourners before theĀ LordĀ of Heavenās Armies?Ā So now we consider the arrogant to be blessed; indeed, those who practice evil are successful.Ā In fact, those who challengeĀ God escape!āā
Then those who respectedĀ theĀ LordĀ spoke to one another, and theĀ LordĀ took notice.Ā A scrollĀ was prepared before him in which were recorded the names of those who respected theĀ LordĀ and honored his name.Ā āThey will belong to me,ā says theĀ LordĀ of Heavenās Armies, āin the day when I prepare my own special property.Ā I will spare them as a man spares his son who serves him.Ā Then once more you will see that I make a distinction betweenĀ the righteous and the wicked, between the one who serves God and the one who does not.
