## š Scripture Text (NET)
(The NET Bible: New English Translation. Biblical Studies Press, 2005)
### The Rebellion of Korah
[[#Verse 01.]]Ā Ā Now Korah son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, and Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, and On son of Peleth, who were Reubenites,Ā took menĀ
[[#Verse 02.]]Ā and rebelled against Moses, along with some of the Israelites, 250 leadersĀ of the community, chosen from the assembly,Ā famous men.Ā
[[#Verse 03.]]Ā And they assembled against Moses and Aaron, saying to them, āYou take too much upon yourselves,Ā seeing that the whole community is holy, every one of them, and theĀ LordĀ is among them. Why then do you exalt yourselves above the community of theĀ Lord?ā
[[#Verse 04.]]Ā When Moses heard it he fell down with his face to the ground.
[[#Verse 05.]]Ā Then he said to Korah and to all his company, āIn the morning theĀ LordĀ will make known who are his, and who is holy. He will cause that personĀ to approach him; the person he has chosen he will cause to approach him.Ā
[[#Verse 06.]]Ā Do this, Korah, you and all your company:Ā Take censers,Ā
[[#Verse 07.]]Ā put fire in them, and set incense on them before theĀ LordĀ tomorrow, and the man whom theĀ LordĀ chooses will be holy. You take too much upon yourselves, you sons of Levi!ā
[[#Verse 08.]]Ā Moses said to Korah, āListen now, you sons of Levi!Ā
[[#Verse 09.]]Ā Does it seem too small a thing to you that the God of Israel has separated you from the community of Israel to bring you near to himself, to perform the service of the tabernacle of theĀ Lord, and to stand before the community to minister to them?Ā
[[#Verse 10.]]Ā He has brought you near and all your brothers, the sons of Levi, with you. Do you now seekĀ the priesthood also?Ā
[[#Verse 11.]]Ā Therefore you and all your company have assembled together against theĀ Lord!Ā And Aaronāwhat is he that you murmur against him?ā
[[#Verse 12.]]Ā Then Moses summonedĀ Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, but they said, āWe will not come up.Ā
[[#Verse 13.]]Ā Is it a small thingĀ that you have brought us up out of the land that flows with milk and honey,Ā to kill us in the wilderness? Now do you want to make yourself a princeĀ over us?Ā
[[#Verse 14.]]Ā Moreover,Ā you have not brought us into a land that flows with milk and honey, nor given us an inheritance of fields and vineyards. Do you think you can blindĀ these men? We will not come up.ā
[[#Verse 15.]]Ā Moses was very angry, and he said to theĀ Lord, āHave no respectĀ for their offering! I have not taken so much as one donkey from them, nor have I harmed any one of them!ā
[[#Verse 16.]]Ā Then Moses said to Korah, āYou and all your company present yourselves before theĀ Lordāyou and they, and Aaronātomorrow.Ā
[[#Verse 17.]]Ā And each of youĀ take his censer, putĀ incense in it, and then each of you present his censer before theĀ Lord: 250 censers, along with you, and Aaronāeach of you with his censer.āĀ
[[#Verse 18.]]Ā So everyone took his censer, put fire in it, and set incense on it, and stood at the entrance of the tent of meeting, with Moses and Aaron.Ā
[[#Verse 19.]]Ā WhenĀ Korah assembled the whole community against them at the entrance of the tent of meeting, then the glory of theĀ LordĀ appeared to the whole community.
### The Judgment on the Rebels
[[#Verse 20.]]Ā TheĀ LordĀ spoke to Moses and Aaron:Ā
[[#Verse 21.]]Ā āSeparate yourselvesĀ from among this community,Ā that I may consume them in an instant.āĀ
[[#Verse 22]]Ā Then they threw themselves down with their faces to the groundĀ and said, āO God, the God of the spirits of all people,Ā will you be angry with the whole community when only one man sins?ā
[[#Verse 23.]]Ā So theĀ LordĀ spoke to Moses:Ā
[[#Verse 24.]]Ā āTell the community: āGet awayĀ from around the homes of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram.āāĀ
[[#Verse 25.]]Ā Then Moses got upĀ and went to Dathan and Abiram; and the elders of Israel went after him.Ā
[[#Verse 26.]]Ā And he said to the community, āMove away from the tents of these wickedĀ men, and do not touch anything they have, lest you be destroyed becauseĀ of all their sins.āĀ
[[#Verse 27.]]Ā So they got away from the homes of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram on every side, and Dathan and Abiram came out and stationed themselvesĀ in the entrances of their tents with their wives, their children, and their toddlers.Ā
[[#Verse 28.]]Ā Then Moses said, āThis is howĀ you will know that theĀ LordĀ has sent me to do all these works, for I have not done them of my own will.Ā
[[#Verse 29.]]Ā If these men die a natural death,Ā or if they share the fateĀ of all men, then theĀ LordĀ has not sent me.Ā
[[#Verse 30.]]Ā But if theĀ LordĀ does something entirely new,Ā and the earth opens its mouth and swallows them upĀ along with all that they have, and theyĀ go down alive to the grave,Ā then you will know that these men have despised theĀ Lord!ā
[[#Verse 31.]]Ā When he had finishedĀ speakingĀ all these words, the ground that was under them split open,Ā
[[#Verse 32.]]Ā and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them, along with their households, and all Korahās men, and all their goods.Ā
[[#Verse 33.]]Ā They and all that they had went down alive into the pit, and the earth closed over them. So they perished from among the community.Ā
[[#Verse 34.]]Ā All the IsraelitesĀ who were around them fled at their cry,Ā for they said, āWhat ifĀ the earth swallows us too?āĀ
[[#Verse 35.]]Ā Then a fireĀ went out from theĀ LordĀ and devoured the 250 men who offered incense.
### The Atonement for the Rebellion
[[#Verse 36.]]Ā (17:1)Ā TheĀ LordĀ spoke to Moses:Ā
[[#Verse 37.]]Ā āTellĀ Eleazar son of Aaron the priest to pick upĀ the censers out of the flame, for they are holy, and then scatter the coals of fireĀ at a distance.Ā
[[#Verse 38.]]Ā As for the censers of these men who sinned at the cost of their lives,Ā they must be madeĀ into hammered sheets for covering the altar, because they presented them before theĀ LordĀ and sanctified them. They will become a sign to the Israelites.āĀ
[[#Verse 39.]]Ā So Eleazar the priest took the bronze censers presented by those who had been burned up, and they were hammered out as a covering for the altar.Ā
[[#Verse 40.]]Ā It was a memorial for the Israelites, that no outsider who is not a descendant ofĀ Aaron should approach to burn incense before theĀ Lord, that he might not become like Korah and his companyājust as theĀ LordĀ had spoken by the authorityĀ of Moses.Ā
[[#Verse 41.]]Ā But on the next day the whole community of Israelites murmured against Moses and Aaron, saying, āYou have killed theĀ Lordās people!āĀ
[[#Verse 42.]]Ā When the community assembledĀ against Moses and Aaron, they turned toward the tent of meetingāandĀ the cloud covered it, and the glory of theĀ LordĀ appeared.Ā
[[#Verse 43.]]Ā Then Moses and Aaron stood before the tent of meeting.
[[#Verse 44.]]Ā TheĀ LordĀ spoke to Moses:Ā
[[#Verse 45.]]Ā āGet away from this community, so that I can consume them in an instant!ā But they threw themselves down with their faces to the ground.Ā
[[#Verse 46.]]Ā Then Moses said to Aaron, āTake the censer, put burning coals from the altar in it, place incense on it, and go quickly into the assembly and make atonement for them, for wrath has gone out from theĀ Lordāthe plague has begun!āĀ
[[#Verse 47.]]Ā So Aaron didĀ as Moses commandedĀ and ran into the middle of the assembly, where the plague was just beginning among the people. So he placed incense on the coals and made atonement for the people.Ā
[[#Verse 48.]]Ā He stood between the dead and the living, and the plague was stopped.Ā
[[#Verse 49.]]Ā Now 14,700 people died in the plague, in addition to those who died in the event with Korah.Ā
[[#Verse 50.]]Ā Then Aaron returned to Moses at the entrance of the tent of meeting, and the plague was stopped.
