Biblical Studies Press, 2005) ### Balaam Refuses to Curse Israel [[#Verse 01.]]Ā Ā The Israelites traveled onĀ and camped in the rift valley plainsĀ of Moab on the side of the Jordan RiverĀ across from Jericho.Ā  [[#Verse 02.]]Ā Balak son of Zippor saw all that the Israelites had done to the Amorites.Ā  [[#Verse 03.]]Ā And the Moabites were greatly afraid of the people, because they were so numerous. The Moabites were sick with fear because of the Israelites. [[#Verse 04.]]Ā So the Moabites said to the elders of Midian, ā€œNow this mass of peopleĀ will lick up everything around us, as the bull devours the grass of the field.ā€ Now Balak son of Zippor was king of the Moabites at this time.Ā  [[#Verse 05.]]Ā And he sent messengers to BalaamĀ son of Beor at Pethor, which is by the Euphrates RiverĀ in the land of Amaw,Ā to summon him, saying, ā€œLook, a nation has come out of Egypt. They cover the faceĀ of the earth, and they are settling next to me.Ā  [[#Verse 06.]]Ā SoĀ now, please come and curse this nationĀ for me, for they are too powerful for me. Perhaps I will prevail so that we may conquer themĀ and drive them out of the land. For I know that whoever you bless is blessed,Ā and whoever you curse is cursed.ā€ [[#Verse 07.]]Ā So the elders of Moab and the elders of Midian departed with the fee for divination in their hands. They came to Balaam and reportedĀ to him the words of Balak.Ā  [[#Verse 08.]]Ā He replied to them, ā€œStayĀ here tonight, and I will bring back to you whatever word theĀ LordĀ may speak to me.ā€ So the princes of Moab stayed with Balaam.Ā  [[#Verse 09.]]Ā And God came to Balaam and said, ā€œWho are these men with you?ā€Ā  [[#Verse 10.]]Ā Balaam said to God, ā€œBalak son of Zippor, king of Moab, has sent a message to me, saying, [[#Verse 11.]]Ā ā€˜Look, a nation has come outĀ of Egypt, and it covers the face of the earth. Come now and put a curse on them for me; perhaps I will be able to defeat themĀ and drive them out.ā€™ā€Ā  [[#Verse 12.]]Ā But God said to Balaam, ā€œYou must not go with them; you must not curse the people,Ā for they are blessed.ā€ [[#Verse 13.]]Ā So Balaam got up in the morning, and said to the princes of Balak, ā€œGo to your land,Ā for theĀ LordĀ has refused to permit me to goĀ with you.ā€Ā  [[#Verse 14.]]Ā So the princes of Moab departedĀ and went back to Balak and said, ā€œBalaam refused to come with us.ā€ ### Balaam Accompanies the Moabite Princes [[#Verse 15.]]Ā Balak again sent princes,Ā more numerous and more distinguished than the first.Ā  [[#Verse 16.]]Ā And they came to Balaam and said to him, ā€œThus says Balak son of Zippor: ā€˜Please do not let anything hinder you from comingĀ to me.Ā  [[#Verse 17.]]Ā For I will honor you greatly,Ā and whatever you tell me I will do. So come, put a curse on this nation for me.ā€™ā€ [[#Verse 18.]]Ā Balaam repliedĀ to the servants of Balak, ā€œEven if Balak would give me his palace full of silver and gold, I could not transgress the commandmentĀ of theĀ LordĀ my GodĀ to do less or more.Ā  [[#Verse 19.]]Ā Now therefore, please stayĀ the night here also, that I may know what more theĀ LordĀ might say to me.ā€Ā  [[#Verse 20.]]Ā God came to Balaam that night, and said to him, ā€œIf the men have come to call you, get up and go with them, but the word that I will say to you, that you must do.ā€Ā  [[#Verse 21.]]Ā So Balaam got up in the morning, saddled his donkey, and went with the princes of Moab. ### God Opposes Balaam [[#Verse 22.]]Ā Then God’s anger was kindledĀ because he went, and the angel of theĀ LordĀ stood in the road to opposeĀ him. Now he was riding on his donkey and his two servants were with him.Ā  [[#Verse 23.]]Ā And the donkey saw the angel of theĀ LordĀ standing in the road withĀ his sword drawn in his hand, so the donkey turned aside from the road and went into the field. But Balaam beat the donkey, to make her turn back to the road. [[#Verse 24.]]Ā Then the angel of theĀ LordĀ stood in a pathĀ among the vineyards, where there was a wall on either side.Ā  [[#Verse 25.]]Ā And when the donkey saw the angel of theĀ Lord, she pressed herself into the wall, and crushed Balaam’s foot against the wall. So he beat her again. [[#Verse 26.]]Ā Then the angel of theĀ LordĀ went farther, and stood in a narrow place, where there was no way to turn either to the right or to the left.Ā  [[#Verse 27.]] When the donkey saw the angel of theĀ Lord, she crouched down under Balaam. Then Balaam was angry, and he beat his donkey with a staff. [[#Verse 28.]]Ā Then theĀ LordĀ opened the mouth of the donkey, and she said to Balaam, ā€œWhat have I done to you that you have beaten me these three times?ā€Ā  [[#Verse 29.]]Ā And Balaam said to the donkey, ā€œYou have made me look stupid; I wishĀ there were a sword in my hand, for I would kill you right now.ā€Ā  [[#Verse 30.]]Ā The donkey said to Balaam, ā€œAm I not your donkey that you have ridden ever since I was yours until this day? Have I ever attemptedĀ to treat you this way?ā€Ā And he said, ā€œNo.ā€Ā  [[#Verse 31.]]Ā Then theĀ LordĀ opened Balaam’s eyes, and he saw the angel of theĀ LordĀ standing in the way with his sword drawn in his hand; so he bowed his head and threw himself down with his face to the ground.Ā  [[#Verse 32.]] The angel of theĀ LordĀ said to him, ā€œWhy have you beaten your donkey these three times? Look, I came out to oppose you because what you are doingĀ is perverse before me.Ā  [[#Verse 33.]]Ā The donkey saw me and turned from me these three times. IfĀ she had not turned from me, I would have killed you but saved her alive.ā€Ā  [[#Verse 34.]]Ā Balaam said to the angel of theĀ Lord, ā€œI have sinned, for I did not know that you stood against me in the road.Ā So now, if it is evil in your sight,Ā I will go back home.ā€Ā  [[#Verse 35.]]Ā But the angel of theĀ LordĀ said to Balaam, ā€œGo with the men, but you may only speakĀ the word that I will speak to you.ā€Ā So Balaam went with the princes of Balak. ### Balaam Meets Balak [[#Verse 36.]]Ā When Balak heard that Balaam was coming, he went out to meet him at a city of Moab that was on the border of the Arnon at the boundary of his territory.Ā  [[#Verse 37.]]Ā Balak said to Balaam, ā€œDid I not send again and againĀ to you to summon you? Why did you not come to me? Am I not able to honor you?ā€Ā  [[#Verse 38.]]Ā Balaam said to Balak, ā€œLook, I have come to you. Now, am I ableĀ to speakĀ just anything? I must speakĀ only the word that God puts in my mouth.ā€Ā  [[#Verse 39.]]Ā So Balaam went with Balak, and they came to Kiriath Huzoth.Ā  [[#Verse 40.]]Ā And Balak sacrificed bulls and sheep, and sent someĀ to Balaam, and to the princes who were with him.Ā  [[#Verse 41.]]Ā Then on the next morning Balak took Balaam, and brought him up to Bamoth Baal.Ā From there he saw the extent of the nation. ## ==šŸ“– Verse-by-Verse Commentary== ###### Overall. ###### Verse 01. ###### Verse 02. ###### Verse 03. ###### Verse 04. ###### Verse 05. ###### Verse 06. ###### Verse 07. ###### Verse 08. ###### Verse 09. ###### Verse 10. ###### Verse 11. ###### Verse 12. ###### Verse 13. ###### Verse 14. ###### Verse 15. ###### Verse 16. ###### Verse 17. ###### Verse 18. ###### Verse 19. ###### Verse 20. ###### Verse 21. ###### Verse 22. ###### Verse 23. ###### Verse 24. ###### Verse 25. ###### Verse 26. ###### Verse 27. ###### Verse 28. ###### Verse 29. ###### Verse 30. ###### Verse 31. ###### Verse 32. ###### Verse 33. ###### Verse 34. ###### Verse 35. ###### Verse 36. ###### Verse 37. ###### Verse 38. ###### Verse 39. ###### Verse 40. ###### Verse 41. ## šŸ¤” Interesting Facts / Historical and Cultural Insights - coming soon. %% PRIVATE NOTES (only I see this) Write down things that are not straight from commentary but interesting facts that ground the text in history. %% ## 🧠 Chapter Summary - coming soon. %% PRIVATE NOTES (only I see this) Write a short paragraph (3–5 sentences) summarizing what happens in this chapter. - What is the main event or teaching? - How does this chapter fit the book’s overall story? - What stands out immediately?
