## š Scripture Text (NET)
(The NET Bible: New English Translation. Biblical Studies Press, 2005)
### Israelās Sin with the Moabite Women
[[#Verse 01.]]Ā WhenĀ Israel lived in Shittim, the people began to commit sexual immoralityĀ with the daughters of Moab.Ā
[[#Verse 02.]]Ā These women invitedĀ the people to the sacrifices of their gods; then the people ate and bowed down to their gods.Ā
[[#Verse 03.]]Ā When Israel joined themselves to Baal Peor,Ā the anger of theĀ LordĀ flared up against Israel.
### Godās Punishment
[[#Verse 04.]]Ā TheĀ LordĀ said to Moses, āArrest all the leadersĀ of the people, and hang them upĀ before theĀ LordĀ in broad daylight,Ā so that the fierce anger of theĀ LordĀ may be turned away from Israel.āĀ
[[#Verse 05.]]Ā So Moses said to the judges of Israel, āEach of you must execute those of his menĀ who were joined to Baal Peor.ā
[[#Verse 06.]]Ā Just thenĀ one of the Israelites came and brought to his brothersĀ a Midianite woman in the plain view of Moses and ofĀ the whole community of the Israelites, while theyĀ were weeping at the entrance of the tent of meeting.Ā
[[#Verse 07.]]Ā When Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it,Ā he got up from among the assembly, took a javelin in his hand,Ā
[[#Verse 08.]]Ā and went after the Israelite man into the tentĀ and thrust through the Israelite man and into the womanās abdomen.Ā So the plague was stopped from the Israelites.Ā
[[#Verse 09.]]Ā Those that died in the plague were 24,000.
### The Aftermath
[[#Verse 10.]]Ā TheĀ LordĀ spoke to Moses:Ā
[[#Verse 11.]]Ā āPhinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, has turned my anger away from the Israelites, when he manifested such zealĀ for my sake among them, so that I did not consume the Israelites in my zeal.Ā
[[#Verse 12.]]Ā Therefore, announce:Ā āI am going to giveĀ to him my covenant of peace.Ā
[[#Verse 13.]]Ā So it will be to him and his descendants after him a covenant of a permanent priesthood, because he has been zealous for his God,Ā and has made atonementĀ for the Israelites.āā
[[#Verse 14.]]Ā Now the name of the Israelite who was stabbedāthe one who was stabbed with the Midianite womanāwas Zimri son of Salu, a leader of a clanĀ of the Simeonites.Ā
[[#Verse 15.]]Ā The name of the Midianite woman who was killed was Cozbi daughter of Zur. He was a leaderĀ over the people of a clan of Midian.
[[#Verse 16.]]Ā Then theĀ LordĀ spoke to Moses:Ā
[[#Verse 17.]]Ā āBring troubleĀ to the Midianites, and destroy them,Ā
[[#Verse 18.]]Ā because they bring trouble to you by their treachery with which they have deceivedĀ you in the matter of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of a prince of Midian,Ā their sister, who was killed on the day of the plague that happened as a result of Peor.ā
