## š Scripture Text (NET)
(The NET Bible: New English Translation. Biblical Studies Press, 2005)
### The Journey from Kadesh Barnea to Moab
[[#Verse 01.]]Ā Then we turned and set out toward the wilderness on the way to the Red SeaĀ just as theĀ LordĀ told me to do, detouring around Mount Seir for a long time.Ā
[[#Verse 02.]]Ā At this point theĀ LordĀ said to me,Ā
[[#Verse 03.]] āYou have circled around this mountain long enough; now turn north.Ā
[[#Verse 04.]]Ā InstructĀ these people as follows: āYou are about to cross the border of your relativesĀ the descendants of Esau,Ā who inhabit Seir. They will be afraid of you, so watch yourselves carefully.Ā
[[#Verse 05.]]Ā Do not be hostile toward them, because I am not giving you any of their land, not even a footprint, for I have given Mount SeirĀ as an inheritance for Esau.Ā
[[#Verse 06.]]Ā You may purchaseĀ food to eat and water to drink from them.Ā
[[#Verse 07.]]Ā All along the way I, theĀ LordĀ your God,Ā have blessed your every effort.Ā I haveĀ been attentive toĀ your travels through this great wilderness. These forty years I haveĀ been with you; you have lacked nothing.āā
[[#Verse 08.]]Ā So we turned away from our relativesĀ the descendants of Esau, the inhabitants of Seir, turning from the route of the rift valleyĀ which comes up fromĀ ElatĀ and Ezion Geber,Ā and traveling the way of the wilderness of Moab.Ā
[[#Verse 09.]]Ā Then theĀ LordĀ said to me, āDo not harass Moab and provoke them to war, for I will not give you any of their land as your territory. This is because I have given ArĀ to the descendants of LotĀ as their possession.Ā
[[#Verse 10.]]Ā (The EmitesĀ used to live there, a people as powerful, numerous, and tall as the Anakites.Ā
[[#Verse 11.]]Ā These people, as well as the Anakites, are also considered Rephaites;Ā the Moabites call them Emites.Ā
[[#Verse 12.]]Ā Previously the HoritesĀ lived in Seir, but the descendants of Esau dispossessed and destroyed them and settled in their place, just as Israel did to the land it came to possess, the land theĀ LordĀ gave them.)Ā
[[#Verse 13.]]Ā Now, get up and cross the Wadi Zered.āĀ So we did so.Ā
[[#Verse 14.]]Ā Now the length of time it took for us to go from Kadesh Barnea to the crossing of Wadi Zered was thirty-eight years, time for all the military men of that generation to die, just as theĀ LordĀ had vowed to them.Ā
[[#Verse 15.]]Ā Indeed, it was the very hand of theĀ LordĀ that eliminated them from withinĀ the camp until they were all gone.
### Instructions Concerning Ammon
[[#Verse 16.]]Ā So it was that after all the military men had been eliminated from the community,Ā
[[#Verse 17.]]Ā theĀ LordĀ said to me,Ā
[[#Verse 18.]]Ā āToday you are going to cross the border of Moab, that is, of Ar.Ā
[[#Verse 19.]]Ā But when you come close to the Ammonites, do not harass or provoke them because I am not giving you any of the Ammonitesā land as your possession; I have already given it to Lotās descendantsĀ as their possession.ā
[[#Verse 20.]]Ā (That also is considered to be a land of the Rephaites.Ā The Rephaites lived there originally; the Ammonites call them Zamzummites.Ā
[[#Verse 21.]]Ā They are a people as powerful, numerous, and tall as the Anakites. But theĀ Lord destroyed the RephaitesĀ in advance of the Ammonites,Ā so they dispossessed them and settled down in their place.Ā
[[#Verse 22.]]Ā This is exactly what he did for the descendants of Esau who lived in Seir when he destroyed the Horites before them so that they could dispossess them and settle in their area to this very day.Ā
[[#Verse 23.]]Ā As for the AvvitesĀ who lived in settlements as far west as Gaza, CaphtoritesĀ who came from CreteĀ destroyed them and settled down in their place.)
[[#Verse 24.]]Ā āGet up, make your way across Wadi Arnon. Look, I have already delivered over to you Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon,Ā and his land. Go aheadātake it! Engage him in war!
[[#Verse 25.]]Ā This very day I will begin to fill all the people of the earthĀ with dread and to terrify them when they hear about you. They will shiver and shake in anticipation of your approach.ā
### Defeat of Sihon, King of Heshbon
[[#Verse 26.]]Ā Then I sent messengers from the KedemothĀ wilderness to King Sihon of Heshbon with an offer of peace:Ā
[[#Verse 27.]]Ā āLet me pass through your land; I will keep strictly to the roadway.Ā I will not turn aside to the right or the left.Ā
[[#Verse 28.]]Ā Sell me food for cashĀ so that I can eat and sell me water to drink.Ā Just allow me to go through on foot,
[[#Verse 29.]]Ā just as the descendants of Esau who live at Seir and the Moabites who live in Ar did for me, until I cross the Jordan to the land theĀ LordĀ our God is giving us.ā
[[#Verse 30.]]Ā But King Sihon of Heshbon was unwilling to allow us to pass near him because theĀ LordĀ ourĀ God had made him obstinateĀ and stubbornĀ so that he might deliver him over to youĀ this very day.
[[#Verse 31.]]Ā TheĀ LordĀ said to me, āLook! I have already begun to give over Sihon and his land to you. Start right now to take his land as your possession.āĀ
[[#Verse 32.]]Ā When Sihon and all his troopsĀ emerged to encounter us in battle at Jahaz,Ā
[[#Verse 33.]]Ā theĀ LordĀ our God delivered him over to us and we struck him down, along with his sonsĀ and everyone else.Ā
[[#Verse 34.]]Ā At that time we seized all his cities and put every one of themĀ under divine judgment,Ā including even the women and children; we left no survivors.Ā
[[#Verse 35.]]Ā We kept only the livestock and plunder from the cities for ourselves.Ā
[[#Verse 36.]]Ā From Aroer,Ā which is at the edge of Wadi Arnon (it is the city in the wadi),Ā all the way to Gilead there was not a town able to resist usātheĀ LordĀ our God gave them all to us.Ā
[[#Verse 37.]]Ā However, you did not approach the land of the Ammonites, the Wadi Jabbok,Ā the cities of the hill country, or any place else forbidden by theĀ LordĀ our God.
