## š Scripture Text (NET)
#### The Opening Exhortation
[[#Verse 01.]] Then Moses called all the people of Israel together and said to them:Ā āListen, Israel, to the statutes and ordinances that I am about to deliver to you today; learn them and be careful to keep them!Ā
[[#Verse 02.]]Ā TheĀ LordĀ our God made a covenant with us at Horeb.
[[#Verse 03.]]Ā HeĀ did not make this covenant with our ancestorsĀ but with us, we who are here today, all of us living now.Ā
[[#Verse 04.]]Ā TheĀ LordĀ spoke face to face with you at the mountain, from the middle of the fire.Ā
[[#Verse 05.]]Ā (I was standing between theĀ LordĀ and you at that time to reveal theĀ Lordās message to you, because you were afraid of the fire and would not go up the mountain.) He said:
#### The Ten Commandments
[[#Verse 06.]]Ā āI am theĀ LordĀ your Godāhe who brought you from the land of Egypt, from the place of slavery.
[[#Verse 07.]]Ā āYou must not have any other godsĀ besides me.
[[#Verse 08.]]Ā āYou must not make for yourself an imageĀ of anything in heaven above, on earth below, or in the waters beneath.Ā
[[#Verse 09.]]Ā You must not worship or serve them, for I, theĀ LordĀ your God, am a jealous God. I punishĀ the sons, grandsons, and great-grandsons for the sin of the fathers who rejectĀ me,Ā
[[#Verse 10.]]Ā but I show covenant faithfulnessĀ to the thousandsĀ who chooseĀ me and keep my commandments.
[[#Verse 11.]]Ā āYou must not make use of the name of theĀ LordĀ your God for worthless purposes,Ā for theĀ LordĀ will not exonerate anyone who abuses his name that way.
[[#Verse 12.]]Ā āBe careful to observeĀ the Sabbath day just as theĀ LordĀ your God has commanded you.Ā
[[#Verse 13.]]Ā You are to work and do all your tasks in six days,
[[#Verse 14.]]Ā but the seventh day is the SabbathĀ of theĀ LordĀ your God. On that day you must not do any work, you, your son, your daughter, your male slave, your female slave, your ox, your donkey, any other animal, or the resident foreigner who lives with you,Ā so that your male and female slaves, like yourself, may have rest.Ā
[[#Verse 15.]]Ā Recall that you were slaves in the land of Egypt and that theĀ LordĀ your God brought you out of there by strength and power.Ā That is why theĀ LordĀ your God has commanded you to observeĀ the Sabbath day.
[[#Verse 16.]]Ā āHonorĀ your father and your mother just as theĀ LordĀ your God has commanded you to do, so that your days may be extended and that it may go well with you in the land that heĀ is about to give you.
[[#Verse 17.]]Ā āYou must not murder.
[[#Verse 18.]]Ā āYou must not commit adultery.
[[#Verse 19.]]Ā āYou must not steal.
[[#Verse 20.]]Ā āYou must not offer false testimony against another.Ā
[[#Verse 21.]]Ā You must not desireĀ another manāsĀ wife, nor should you crave hisĀ house, his field, his male and female servants, his ox, his donkey, or anything else he owns.ā
#### The Narrative of the Sinai Revelation and Israelās Response
[[#Verse 22.]]Ā TheĀ LordĀ said these things to your entire assembly at the mountain from the middle of the fire, the cloud, and the darkness with a loud voice, and that was all he said.Ā Then he inscribed the wordsĀ on two stone tablets and gave them to me.Ā
[[#Verse 23.]]Ā Then, when you heard the voice from the midst of the darkness while the mountain was ablaze, all your tribal leaders and elders approached me.Ā
[[#Verse 24.]]Ā You said, āTheĀ LordĀ our God has shown us his great glory,Ā and we have heard him speak from the middle of the fire. It is now clear to usĀ that God can speak to human beings and they can keep on living.Ā
[[#Verse 25.]]Ā But now, why should we die, because this intense fire will consume us? If we keep hearing the voice of theĀ LordĀ our God we will die!Ā
[[#Verse 26.]]Ā Who is there from the entire human raceĀ who has heard the voice of the living God speaking from the middle of the fire as we have, and has lived?Ā
[[#Verse 27.]]Ā You go near so that you can hear everything theĀ LordĀ our God is saying and then you can tell us whatever heĀ says to you; then we will pay attention and do it.āĀ
[[#Verse 28.]]Ā When theĀ LordĀ heard you speaking to me, heĀ said to me, āI have heard what these people have said to youāthey have spoken well.Ā
[[#Verse 29.]]Ā If only it would really be their desire to fear me and obeyĀ all my commandments in the future, so that it may go well with them and their descendants forever.Ā
[[#Verse 30.]]Ā Go and tell them, āReturn to your tents!āĀ
[[#Verse 31.]]Ā But as for you, remain here with me so I can declare to you all the commandments,Ā statutes, and ordinances that you are to teach them, so that they can carry them out in the land I am about to give them.āĀ
[[#Verse 32.]]Ā Be careful, therefore, to do exactly what theĀ LordĀ your God has commanded you; do not turn right or left!Ā
[[#Verse 33.]]Ā Walk just as heĀ has commanded you so that you may live, that it may go well with you, and that you may live longĀ in the land you are going to possess.
## š ==Verse-by-Verse Commentary==
**Verse 7- 12**.
- The first four commandments teach us how to love God His way. The final six teach us how to love our neighbor God's Way.
**Verse 7- First commandment**.
- This teaches us the exclusivity of God's commitment. He commands us to commit to Him the way He commits to us. This resembles the covenant vows of a marriage. There is no one else who shares the covenant commitment.
- This is also helpful because they are about to be surrounded with many different idolatrous temptations.
- During this time, it was thought that gods had geographical authority. Therefore, God is warning them not to fall for that.
**Verse 8- Second commandment**.
- This is God digging deeper on the commitment. He is not interested in becoming a part of our life. He wants to rule.
- He wants no mediator between us and Him. Many times idols were representations of the gods. God tells us not to do that.
- This is why we should be careful with making Christian movies that directly depict Jesus. We can unintentionally create a false mental idol.
**Verse 11- Third commandment**.
- This verse has been misunderstood for so long.
- **Incorrect** assumption- do not cuss using God's Name. Don't see Jesus, God or GD. (While this is a good goal, this is not the meaning of this verse.)
- **Correct**- Do not carry or represent His Name incorrectly. It would be like telling someone that if they are going to be a part of your team and wear your uniform, they must represent the brand well.
- God told Abraham that through Abraham, God would bless the world. The nation of Israel was supposed to show Yahweh to the world.
**Verse 12- Fourth commandment**.
- Sabbath means so much in our covenant relationship with God.
- One thing it means is it is not just a day to sleep in. It is a "date day" with God.
- It is a day to celebrate freedom from slavery.
- It is a gift.
- God literally says they should remember that it was not always like this.
