Biblical Studies Press, 2005) ### Joshua Sends Home the Eastern Tribes 1Then Joshua summoned the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of ManassehĀ  2Ā and told them: ā€œYou have carried out all the instructions of Moses theĀ Lord’s servant, and you have obeyed all I have told you.Ā  3Ā You have not abandoned your fellow IsraelitesĀ this entire time,Ā right up to this very day. You have completed the task given you by theĀ LordĀ your God.Ā  4Ā Now theĀ LordĀ your God has made your fellow Israelites secure,Ā just as he promised them. So now you may turn around and go to your homesĀ in your own landĀ that Moses theĀ Lord’s servant assigned to you east of the Jordan.Ā  5Ā But carefully obey the commands and instructions Moses theĀ Lord’s servant gave you. LoveĀ theĀ LordĀ your God, follow all his instructions,Ā obeyĀ his commands, be loyal to him,Ā and serve him with all your heart and being!ā€ 6Ā Joshua rewardedĀ them and sent them on their way; they returned to their homes.Ā  7Ā (Now to one half-tribe of Manasseh, Moses had assigned land in Bashan; and to the other half Joshua had assigned land on the west side of the Jordan with their fellow Israelites.) When Joshua sent them home,Ā he rewardedĀ them,Ā  8Ā saying, ā€œTake homeĀ great wealth, a lot of cattle,Ā silver, gold, bronze, iron, and a lot ofĀ clothing. Divide up the goods captured from your enemies with your brothers.ā€ 9Ā So the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh left the Israelites in Shiloh in the land of Canaan and headed home to their own land in Gilead,Ā which they acquired by theĀ Lord’s command through Moses. ### Civil War is Averted 10Ā The Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh came to Geliloth near the Jordan in the land of Canaan and built there, near the Jordan, an impressive altar.Ā  11Ā The Israelites received this report:Ā ā€œLook, the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh have built an altar at the entrance toĀ the land of Canaan, at Geliloth near the Jordan on the Israelite side.ā€Ā  12Ā When the Israelites heard this, the entire Israelite community assembled at Shiloh to launch an attack against them. 13Ā The Israelites sent Phinehas son of Eleazar, the priest, to the land of Gilead to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh.Ā  14Ā He was accompanied by ten leaders, one from each of the Israelite tribes, each one a family leader among the Israelite clans.Ā  15Ā They went to the land of Gilead to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh, and said to them: 16Ā ā€œThe entire community of theĀ LordĀ says, ā€˜Why have you disobeyed the God of Israel by turning back today from following theĀ Lord? You built an altar for yourselves and have rebelled today against theĀ Lord.Ā  17Ā The sin we committed at Peor was bad enough. To this very day we have not purified ourselves; it even brought a plague on the community of theĀ Lord.Ā  18Ā Now today you dare to turn backĀ from following theĀ Lord! You are rebelling today against theĀ Lord; tomorrow he may break out in anger againstĀ the entire community of Israel.Ā  19Ā But if your own landĀ is impure,Ā cross over to theĀ Lord’s own land,Ā where theĀ LordĀ himself lives,Ā and settle down among us.Ā But don’t rebel against theĀ LordĀ or usĀ by building for yourselves an altar other than the altar of theĀ LordĀ our God.Ā  20Ā When Achan son of Zerah disobeyed the command about the city’s riches, the entire Israelite community was judged,Ā though only one man had sinned. He most certainly died for his sin!ā€™ā€ 21Ā The Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh answered the leadersĀ of the Israelite clans:Ā  22Ā ā€œEl, God, theĀ Lord!Ā El, God, theĀ Lord! He knows the truth!Ā Israel must also know! If we have rebelled or disobeyed theĀ Lord,Ā don’t spare usĀ today!Ā  23Ā If we have builtĀ an altar for ourselves to turn back from following theĀ LordĀ by makingĀ burnt sacrifices and grain offerings on it, or by offeringĀ tokens of peaceĀ on it, theĀ LordĀ himself will punish us.Ā  24Ā We swear we have done this because we were worried thatĀ in the future your descendants would say to our descendants, ā€˜What relationship do you have with theĀ LordĀ God of Israel?Ā  25Ā TheĀ LordĀ made the Jordan a boundary between us and you Reubenites and Gadites. You have no right to worship theĀ Lord.’ In this way your descendants might cause our descendants to stop obeyingĀ theĀ Lord.Ā  26Ā So we decided to build this altar, not for burnt offerings and sacrifices,Ā  27Ā but as a reminder to us and youĀ and our descendants who follow us, that we will honor theĀ LordĀ in his very presenceĀ with burnt offerings, sacrifices, and tokens of peace.Ā Then in the future your descendants will not be able to say to our descendants, ā€˜You have no right to worship theĀ Lord.’  28Ā We said, ā€˜If in the future they say such a thingĀ to us or to our descendants, we will reply, ā€œSee the model of theĀ Lord’s altar that our ancestorsĀ made, not for burnt offerings or sacrifices, but as a reminder to us and you.ā€ā€™Ā  29Ā Far be it from us to rebel against theĀ LordĀ by turning back today from following after theĀ LordĀ by building an altar for burnt offerings, sacrifices, and tokens of peaceĀ aside from the altar of theĀ LordĀ our God located in front of his dwelling place!ā€ 30Ā When Phinehas the priest and the community leaders and Israel’s clan leaders who accompanied him heard the defense of the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the Manassehites,Ā they were satisfied.Ā  31Ā Phinehas son of Eleazar, the priest, said to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the Manassehites,Ā ā€œToday we know that theĀ LordĀ is among us, because you have not disobeyed theĀ LordĀ in this.Ā NowĀ you have rescued the Israelites from theĀ Lord’s judgment.ā€ 32Ā Phinehas son of Eleazar, the priest, and the leaders left the Reubenites and Gadites in the land of Gilead and reported back to the Israelites in the land of Canaan.Ā  33Ā The Israelites were satisfied with their report and gave thanks to God.Ā They said nothing more about launching an attack to destroy the land in which the Reubenites and Gadites lived.Ā  34Ā The Reubenites and Gadites named the altar, ā€œSurely it is a Reminder to usĀ that theĀ LordĀ is God.ā€ ## ==šŸ“– Verse-by-Verse Commentary== ###### Overall. ###### Verse 01. ###### Verse 02. ###### Verse 03. ###### Verse 04. ###### Verse 05. ###### Verse 06. ###### Verse 07. ###### Verse 08. ###### Verse 09. ###### Verse 10. ###### Verse 11. ###### Verse 12. ###### Verse 13. ###### Verse 14. ###### Verse 15. ###### Verse 16. ###### Verse 17. ###### Verse 18. ###### Verse 19. ###### Verse 20. ###### Verse 21. ###### Verse 22. ###### Verse 23. ###### Verse 24. ###### Verse 25. ###### Verse 26. ###### Verse 27. ###### Verse 28. ###### Verse 29. ###### Verse 30. ###### Verse 31. ###### Verse 32. ###### Verse 33. ###### Verse 34. ## šŸ¤” Interesting Facts / Historical and Cultural Insights - coming soon. %% PRIVATE NOTES (only I see this) Write down things that are not straight from commentary but interesting facts that ground the text in history. %% ## 🧠 Chapter Summary - coming soon. %% PRIVATE NOTES (only I see this) Write a short paragraph (3–5 sentences) summarizing what happens in this chapter. - What is the main event or teaching? - How does this chapter fit the book’s overall story? - What stands out immediately?
