## š Scripture Text (NET)
(The NET Bible: New English Translation. Biblical Studies Press, 2005)
### Oppression and Confrontation
[[#Verse 01.]]Ā The Israelites did evil in theĀ Lordās sight,Ā so theĀ LordĀ turned them over toĀ Midian for seven years.Ā
[[#Verse 02.]]Ā The MidianitesĀ overwhelmed Israel.Ā Because of Midian the Israelites made sheltersĀ for themselves in the hills, caves, and strongholds.
[[#Verse 03.]]Ā Whenever the Israelites planted their crops,Ā the Midianites, Amalekites, and the people from the east would attack them.
[[#Verse 04.]]Ā They invaded the landĀ and devouredĀ its cropsĀ all the way to Gaza. They left nothing for the Israelites to eat,Ā and they took awayĀ the sheep, oxen, and donkeys.Ā
[[#Verse 05.]]Ā When they invadedĀ with their cattle and tents, they were as thickĀ as locusts. Neither they nor their camels could be counted.Ā They came to devourĀ the land.Ā
[[#Verse 06.]]Ā Israel was so severely weakened by Midian that the Israelites cried out to theĀ LordĀ for help.
[[#Verse 07.]]Ā When the Israelites cried out to theĀ LordĀ for help because of Midian,Ā
[[#Verse 08.]]Ā theĀ LordĀ sent a prophetĀ to the Israelites. He said to them, āThis is what theĀ LordĀ God of Israel has said: āI brought you up from EgyptĀ and took you out of that place of slavery.
[[#Verse 09.]]Ā I rescued you from Egyptās powerĀ and from the power of all who oppressed you. I drove them out before you and gave their land to you.Ā
[[#Verse 10.]]Ā I said to you, āI am theĀ LordĀ your God! Do not worshipĀ the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are now living.ā But you have disobeyed me.āā
### Gideon Meets Some Visitors
[[#Verse 11.]]Ā The angel of theĀ LordĀ came and sat down under the oak tree in Ophrah owned by Joash the Abiezrite. He arrived while Joashās son GideonĀ was threshingĀ wheat in a winepressĀ so he could hide it from the Midianites.Ā
[[#Verse 12.]]Ā The angel of theĀ LordĀ appeared and said to him, āTheĀ LordĀ is with you, courageous warrior!ā
[[#Verse 13.]]Ā Gideon said to him, āPardon me,Ā but if theĀ LordĀ is with us, why has such disasterĀ overtaken us? Where are all his miraculous deeds our ancestors told us about? They said,Ā āDid theĀ LordĀ not bring us up from Egypt?ā But now theĀ LordĀ has abandoned us and handed us over to Midian.ā
[[#Verse 14.]]Ā Then theĀ LordĀ himselfĀ turned to him and said, āYou have the strength.Ā Deliver Israel from the power of the Midianites!Ā Have I not sent you?āĀ
[[#Verse 15.]]Ā GideonĀ said to him, āBut Lord,Ā howĀ can I deliver Israel? Just look! My clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the youngest in my family.āĀ
[[#Verse 16.]]Ā TheĀ LordĀ said to him, āAh, butĀ I will be with you! You will strike down the whole Midianite army.āĀ
[[#Verse 17.]]Ā GideonĀ said to him, āIf you really are pleased with me,Ā then give meĀ a sign as proof that it is really you speaking with me.Ā
[[#Verse 18.]]Ā Do not leave this place until I come backĀ with a giftĀ and present it to you.ā TheĀ LordĀ said, āI will stay here until you come back.ā
[[#Verse 19.]]Ā Gideon went and prepared a young goat,Ā along with unleavened bread made from an ephah of flour. He put the meat in a basket and the broth in a pot. He brought the foodĀ to him under the oak tree and presented it to him.Ā
[[#Verse 20.]]Ā Godās angel said to him, āPut the meat and unleavened bread on this rock,Ā and pour out the broth.ā Gideon did as instructed.Ā
[[#Verse 21.]]Ā The angel of theĀ LordĀ touched the meat and the unleavened bread with the tip of his staff.Ā Fire flared up from the rock and consumed the meat and unleavened bread. The angel of theĀ LordĀ then disappeared.
[[#Verse 22.]]Ā When Gideon realizedĀ that it was the angel of theĀ Lord, heĀ said, āOh no!Ā SovereignĀ Lord!Ā I have seen the angel of theĀ LordĀ face-to-face!ā
[[#Verse 23.]]Ā TheĀ LordĀ said to him, āYou are safe!Ā Do not be afraid. You are not going to die!āĀ
[[#Verse 24]]Ā Gideon built an altar for theĀ LordĀ there, and named it āTheĀ LordĀ is on friendly terms with me.āĀ To this day it is still there in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.
### Gideon Destroys the Altar
[[#Verse 25.]]Ā That night theĀ LordĀ said to him, āTake the bull from your fatherās herd, as well as a second bull, one that is seven years old.Ā Pull down your fatherās Baal altar and cut down the nearby Asherah pole.Ā
[[#Verse 26.]]Ā Then build an altar for theĀ LordĀ your God on the top of this stronghold according to the proper pattern.Ā Take the second bull and offer it as a burnt sacrifice on the wood from the Asherah pole that you cut down.āĀ
[[#Verse 27.]]Ā So Gideon took ten of his servantsĀ and did just as theĀ LordĀ had told him. He was too afraid of his fatherās familyĀ and the men of the city to do it in broad daylight, so he waited until nighttime.
[[#Verse 28.]]Ā When the men of the city got up the next morning, they sawĀ the Baal altar pulled down, the nearby Asherah pole cut down, and the second bull sacrificed on the newly built altar.Ā
[[#Verse 29.]]Ā They said to one another,Ā āWho did this?āĀ They investigated the matter thoroughlyĀ and concludedĀ that Gideon son of Joash had done it.
[[#Verse 30.]]Ā The men of the city said to Joash, āBring out your son, so we can execute him!Ā He pulled down the Baal altar and cut down the nearby Asherah pole.āĀ
[[#Verse 31.]]Ā But Joash said to all those who confronted him,Ā āMust you fight Baalās battles?Ā Must you rescue him? Whoever takes up his causeĀ will die by morning!Ā If he really is a god, let him fight his own battles!Ā After all, it was his altar that was pulled down.āĀ
[[#Verse 32.]]Ā That very day Gideonās father named him Jerub Baal,Ā because he had said, āLet Baal fight with him, for it was his altar that was pulled down.ā
### Gideon Summons an Army and Seeks Confirmation
[[#Verse 33.]]Ā All the Midianites, Amalekites, and the people from the eastĀ assembled. They crossed the Jordan RiverĀ and camped in the Jezreel Valley.
[[#Verse 34.]]Ā TheĀ Lordās Spirit took control ofĀ Gideon. He blew a trumpet,Ā summoning the Abiezrites to follow him.Ā
[[#Verse 35.]]Ā He sent messengers throughout Manasseh and summoned them to follow him as well.Ā He also sent messengers throughout Asher, Zebulun, and Naphtali, and they came up to meet him.
[[#Verse 36.]]Ā Gideon said to God, āIf you really intend to use me to deliver Israel,Ā as you promised, then give me a sign as proof.Ā
[[#Verse 37.]]Ā Look, I am putting a wool fleece on the threshing floor. If there is dew only on the fleece, and the ground around itĀ is dry, then I will be sureĀ that you will use me to deliver Israel,Ā as you promised.āĀ
[[#Verse 38.]]Ā TheĀ LordĀ did as he asked.Ā When he got up the next morning, he squeezed the fleece, and enough dew dripped from it to fill a bowl.Ā
[[#Verse 39.]]Ā Gideon said to God, āPlease do not get angry at me, when I ask for just one more sign.Ā Please allow me one more test with the fleece. This time make only the fleece dry, while the ground around it is covered with dew.āĀ
[[#Verse 40.]]Ā That night God did as he asked.Ā Only the fleece was dry and the ground around it was covered with dew.
