## š Scripture Text (NET)
(The NET Bible: New English Translation. Biblical Studies Press, 2005)
### Hannah Is Childless
[[#Verse 01.]]Ā There was a man from Ramathaim Zophim,Ā from the hill country of Ephraim. His name was Elkanah. He was the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite.Ā
[[#Verse 02.]]Ā He had two wives;Ā the name of the first was Hannah and the name of the second was Peninnah. Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children.Ā
[[#Verse 03.]]Ā This man would go up from his city year after yearĀ to worship and to sacrifice to theĀ LordĀ of Heavenās Armies at Shiloh.Ā (It was there that the two sons of Eli,Ā Hophni and Phinehas, served as theĀ Lordās priests.)
[[#Verse 04.]]Ā The day came, and Elkanah sacrificed. (NowĀ he used to give meat portions to his wife Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters.Ā
[[#Verse 05.]]Ā But to Hannah he would give a doubleĀ portion because he loved Hannah,Ā althoughĀ theĀ LordĀ had not enabled her to have children.Ā
[[#Verse 06.]]Ā Her rival used to aggravate her to the point of exasperation,Ā just to irritate her, since theĀ LordĀ had not enabled her to have children.Ā
[[#Verse 07.]]Ā This is how it would goĀ year after year. As often as she went up to theĀ Lordās house, PeninnahĀ would offend her in that way.) So she cried and refused to eat.Ā
[[#Verse 08.]]Ā Then her husband Elkanah said to her, āHannah, why are you crying and why wonāt you eat? Why are you so upset?Ā Am I not better to you than tenĀ sons?āĀ
[[#Verse 09.]]Ā So Hannah got up after they had finished eating and drinking in Shiloh. At the timeĀ Eli the priest was sitting in his chairĀ by the doorpost of theĀ Lordās sanctuary.Ā
[[#Verse 10.]]Ā As for Hannah, she was very distressed.Ā She prayed to theĀ LordĀ and was, in fact, weeping.Ā
[[#Verse 11.]]Ā She made a vow saying, āOĀ LordĀ of Heavenās Armies, if you would truly lookĀ on the suffering of your servant,Ā and would keep me in mind and not neglectĀ your servant, and give your servant a male child,Ā then I will dedicate him to theĀ LordĀ all the days of his life. His hair will never be cut.ā
[[#Verse 12.]]Ā It turned outĀ that she did a great dealĀ of praying before theĀ Lord. MeanwhileĀ Eli was watching her mouth.Ā
[[#Verse 13.]]Ā As for Hannah, she was speaking in her mind.Ā Only her lips were moving; her voice could not be heard. So Eli thought she was a drunkard.
[[#Verse 14.]]Ā Then heĀ said to her, āHow much longer do you intend to get drunk? Put away your wine!āĀ
[[#Verse 15.]]Ā But Hannah replied, āNot so, my lord! I am a woman under a great deal of stress.Ā I havenāt drunk wine or beer. But I have poured out my soul before theĀ Lord.Ā
[[#Verse 16.]]Ā Donāt consider your servant a wicked woman.Itās just that,Ā to this point, I have spoken from my deep painĀ and anguish.ā
[[#Verse 17.]]Ā Eli replied, āGo in peace, and may the God of Israel grant the request that you have asked of him.āĀ
[[#Verse 18.]]Ā She said, āMay I, your servant, find favor in your sight.āĀ So the woman went her way and got something to eat.Ā Her face no longer looked sad.
[[#Verse 19.]]Ā They got up early the next morning. Then they worshipedĀ theĀ LordĀ and returned to their home at Ramathaim.Ā Elkanah was intimate withĀ his wife Hannah, and theĀ LordĀ called her to mind.Ā
### Hannah Dedicates Samuel to the Lord
[[#Verse 20.]]Ā Then Hannah became pregnant. In the course of time she gave birth to a son.Ā And she named him Samuel, thinking, āI asked theĀ Lord for him.ā
[[#Verse 21.]]Ā Then the man Elkanah and all his family went up to make the yearly sacrificeĀ to theĀ Lord and to keep his vow.Ā
[[#Verse 22.]]Ā But Hannah did not go up with them,Ā because she had toldĀ her husband, āNot until the boy is weaned. Then I will bring him so that he may appear before theĀ Lord. And he will remain there from then on.ā
[[#Verse 23.]]Ā Then her husband Elkanah said to her, āDo what you think best.Ā Stay until you have weaned him. Only may theĀ LordĀ fulfill his promise.ā So the woman stayed and nursed her son until she had weaned him.Ā
[[#Verse 24.]]Ā Then she took him up with heras soon as she had weaned him, along with three bulls,Ā an ephahĀ of flour, and a containerĀ of wine. She came to theĀ Lordās house at Shiloh, and the boy was with them.
[[#Verse 25.]]Ā They slaughtered the bull, then brought the boy to Eli.Ā
[[#Verse 26.]]Ā She said, āMy lord. Just as surely as you are alive, my lord, I am the woman who previously stood here with you in order to pray to theĀ Lord.Ā
[[#Verse 27.]]Ā For this boy I prayed, and theĀ Lordhas given me the request that I asked of him.
[[#Verse 28.]]Ā So I also dedicateĀ him to theĀ Lord. For all the days of his lifeĀ he is dedicated to theĀ Lord.ā Then heĀ bowed down there in worshipĀ to theĀ Lord.
