Biblical Studies Press, 2005) ### Samuel Anoints Saul [[#Verse 01.]]Ā Then Samuel took a small container of olive oil and poured it on Saul’sĀ head. SamuelĀ kissed him and said, ā€œTheĀ LordĀ has chosen youĀ to lead his people Israel! You will rule over theĀ Lord’s people and you will deliver them from the power of the enemies who surround them. This will be your sign that theĀ LordĀ has chosenĀ you as leader over his inheritance.Ā  [[#Verse 02.]]Ā When you leave me today, you will find two men near Rachel’s tomb at Zelzah on Benjamin’s border. They will say to you, ā€˜The donkeys you have gone looking for have been found. Your father is no longer concerned about the donkeys but has become anxious about you two!Ā He is asking, ā€œWhat should I do about my son?ā€ā€™ [[#Verse 03.]]Ā ā€œAs you continue on from there, you will come to the tall tree of Tabor. At that point three men who are going up to God at Bethel will meet you. One of them will be carrying three young goats, one of them will be carrying three round loaves of bread, and one of them will be carrying a container of wine. [[#Verse 04.]]Ā They will ask you how you’re doing and will give you two loaves of bread. You will accept them.Ā  [[#Verse 05.]]Ā Afterward you will go to Gibeah of God, where there are Philistine officials.Ā When you enter the town, you will meet a company of prophets coming down from the high place. They will have harps, tambourines, flutes, and lyres, and they will be prophesying.Ā  [[#Verse 06.]]Ā Then the Spirit of theĀ LordĀ will rush upon you and you will prophesy with them. You will be changed into a different person. [[#Verse 07.]]Ā ā€œWhen these signs have taken place, do whatever your hand finds to do, for God will be with you. [[#Verse 08.]]Ā You will go down to Gilgal before me. I am going to join you there to offer burnt offerings and to make peace offerings. You should wait for seven days until I arrive and tell you what to do.ā€ ### Saul Becomes King [[#Verse 09.]] As SaulĀ turnedĀ to leave Samuel, God changed his inmost person.Ā All these signs happened on that very day.Ā  [[#Verse 10.]]Ā When Saul and his servantĀ arrived at Gibeah, a company of prophets was coming out to meet him. Then the Spirit of God rushed upon SaulĀ and he prophesied among them.Ā  [[#Verse 11.]]Ā When everyone who had known him previously saw him prophesying with the prophets, the people asked one another, ā€œWhat on earth has happened to the son of Kish? Does even Saul belong with the prophets?ā€ [[#Verse 12.]]Ā A man who was from there replied, ā€œAnd who is their father?ā€ Therefore this became a proverb: ā€œIs even Saul among the prophets?ā€ [[#Verse 13.]]Ā When SaulĀ had finished prophesying, he went to the high place. [[#Verse 14.]]Ā Saul’s uncle asked him and his servant, ā€œWhere did you go?ā€ SaulĀ replied, ā€œTo look for the donkeys. But when we realized they were lost,Ā we went to Samuel.ā€ [[#Verse 15.]]Ā Saul’s uncle said, ā€œTell me what Samuel said to you.ā€Ā  [[#Verse 16.]]Ā Saul said to his uncle, ā€œHe assured us that the donkeys had been found.ā€ But SaulĀ did not tell him what Samuel had said about the matter of kingship. [[#Verse 17.]]Ā Then Samuel called the people together before theĀ LordĀ at Mizpah.Ā  [[#Verse 18.]]Ā He said to the Israelites, ā€œThis is what theĀ LordĀ God of Israel has said, ā€˜I brought Israel up from Egypt and I delivered you from the powerĀ of the Egyptians and from the power of all the kingdoms that oppressed you.Ā  [[#Verse 19.]]Ā But today you have rejected your God who saves you from all your trouble and distress. You have said, ā€œNo!Ā Appoint a king over us.ā€ Now take your positions before theĀ LordĀ by your tribes and by your clans.ā€™ā€ [[#Verse 20.]]Ā Then Samuel brought all the tribes of Israel near, and the tribe of Benjamin was chosen by lot. [[#Verse 21.]]Ā Then he brought the tribe of Benjamin near by its families, and the family of Matri was chosen by lot. At last Saul son of Kish was chosen by lot. But when they looked for him, he was nowhere to be found.Ā  [[#Verse 22.]]Ā So they inquired again of theĀ Lord, ā€œHas the man arrived here yet?ā€ TheĀ LordĀ said, ā€œHe has hidden himself among the equipment.ā€ [[#Verse 23.]]Ā So they ran and brought him from there. When he took his position among the people, he stood head and shoulders above them all.Ā  [[#Verse 24.]]Ā Then Samuel said to all the people, ā€œDo you see the one whom theĀ LordĀ has chosen? Indeed, there is no one like him among all the people.ā€ All the people shouted out, ā€œLong live the king!ā€ [[#Verse 25.]]Ā Then Samuel talked to the people about how the kingship would work.Ā He wrote it all down on a scroll and set it before theĀ Lord. Then Samuel sent all the people away to their homes.Ā  [[#Verse 26.]]Ā Even Saul went to his home in Gibeah. With him went some brave men whose hearts God had touched. [[#Verse 27.]]Ā But some wicked menĀ said, ā€œHow can this man save us?ā€ They despised him and did not even bring him a gift. But Saul said nothing about it. ## ==šŸ“– Verse-by-Verse Commentary== ###### Overall. ###### Verse 01. ###### Verse 02. ###### Verse 03. ###### Verse 04. ###### Verse 05. ###### Verse 06. ###### Verse 07. ###### Verse 08. ###### Verse 09. ###### Verse 10. ###### Verse 11. ###### Verse 12. ###### Verse 13. ###### Verse 14. ###### Verse 15. ###### Verse 16. ###### Verse 17. ###### Verse 18. ###### Verse 19. ###### Verse 20. ###### Verse 21. ###### Verse 22. ###### Verse 23. ###### Verse 24. ###### Verse 25. ###### Verse 26. ###### Verse 27. ## šŸ¤” Interesting Facts / Historical and Cultural Insights - coming soon. %% PRIVATE NOTES (only I see this) Write down things that are not straight from commentary but interesting facts that ground the text in history. %% ## 🧠 Chapter Summary - coming soon. %% PRIVATE NOTES (only I see this) Write a short paragraph (3–5 sentences) summarizing what happens in this chapter. - What is the main event or teaching? - How does this chapter fit the book’s overall story? - What stands out immediately?
