Biblical Studies Press, 2005) #### The Ministry of John the Baptist 1Ā In those days John the Baptist came into the wildernessĀ of Judea proclaiming,Ā 2Ā ā€œRepent,Ā for the kingdom of heaven is near.ā€Ā 3Ā For he is the one about whom the prophet Isaiah had spoken: ā€œ**_The voice_**Ā **_of one shouting in the wilderness,_** ā€˜**_Prepare the way for the Lord, make_**Ā **_his paths straight_**.ā€™ā€ 4Ā Now John wore clothing made from camel’s hair with a leather belt around his waist, and his diet consisted of locusts and wild honey.Ā 5Ā Then people from Jerusalem,Ā as well as all Judea and all the region around the Jordan, were going out to him,Ā 6Ā and he was baptizing themĀ in the Jordan River as they confessed their sins. 7Ā But when he saw many PhariseesĀ and SadduceesĀ coming to his baptism, he said to them, ā€œYou offspring of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?Ā 8Ā Therefore produce fruitĀ that proves yourĀ repentance,Ā 9Ā and don’t think you can say to yourselves, ā€˜We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that God can raise up children for Abraham from these stones!Ā 10Ā Even now the ax is laid atĀ the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire. 11Ā ā€œI baptize you with water, for repentance, but the one coming after me is more powerful than I am—I am not worthyĀ to carry his sandals! He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.Ā 12Ā His winnowing forkĀ is in his hand, and he will clean out his threshing floor and will gather his wheat into the storehouse, but the chaff he will burn up with inextinguishable fire!ā€ #### The Baptism of Jesus 13Ā Then Jesus came from Galilee to John to be baptized by him in the Jordan River.Ā 14Ā But JohnĀ tried to preventĀ him, saying, ā€œI need to be baptized by you, and yet you come to me?ā€Ā 15Ā So Jesus repliedĀ to him, ā€œLet it happen now,Ā for it is right for us to fulfill all righteousness.ā€ Then JohnĀ yieldedĀ to him.Ā 16Ā AfterJesus was baptized, just as he was coming up out of the water, theĀ heavensopenedĀ and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a doveĀ and coming to restĀ on him.Ā 17Ā AndĀ a voice from heaven said,Ā ā€œThis is my one dear Son;Ā in himI take great delight.ā€ ## ==šŸ“– Verse-by-Verse Commentary== - coming soon. %% PRIVATE NOTES (only I see this) Write something for each verse Each verse is important. %% ## šŸ¤” Interesting Facts / Historical and Cultural Insights - coming soon. %% PRIVATE NOTES (only I see this) Write down things that are not straight from commentary but interesting facts that ground the text in history. %% ## 🧠 Chapter Summary - coming soon. %% PRIVATE NOTES (only I see this) Write a short paragraph (3–5 sentences) summarizing what happens in this chapter. - What is the main event or teaching? - How does this chapter fit the book’s overall story? - What stands out immediately?
