Biblical Studies Press, 2005) #### The Resurrection **Principle**: The King Keeps His Promises. [[#Verse 01.]] Early on Sunday morning, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and found that the stone had been rolled away from the entrance.  [[#Verse 02.]] She ran and found Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved. She said, “They have taken the Lord’s body out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they have put him!” [[#Verse 03.]] Peter and the other disciple started out for the tomb.  [[#Verse 04.]] They were both running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first.  [[#Verse 05.]] He stooped and looked in and saw the linen wrappings lying there, but he didn’t go in.  [[#Verse 06.]] Then Simon Peter arrived and went inside. He also noticed the linen wrappings lying there, [[#Verse 07.]] while the cloth that had covered Jesus’ head was folded up and lying apart from the other wrappings.  [[#Verse 08.]] Then the disciple who had reached the tomb first also went in, and he saw and believed—  [[#Verse 09.]] for until then they still hadn’t understood the Scriptures that said Jesus must rise from the dead.  [[#Verse 10.]] Then they went home. #### Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene **Principle**: Jesus knows our name. [[#Verse 11.]] Mary was standing outside the tomb crying, and as she wept, she stooped and looked in.  [[#Verse 12.]] She saw two white-robed angels, one sitting at the head and the other at the foot of the place where the body of Jesus had been lying.  [[#Verse 13.]] “Dear woman, why are you crying?” the angels asked her. “Because they have taken away my Lord,” she replied, “and I don’t know where they have put him.” [[#Verse 14.]] She turned to leave and saw someone standing there. It was Jesus, but she didn’t recognize him.  [[#Verse 15.]] “Dear woman, why are you crying?” Jesus asked her. “Who are you looking for?” She thought he was the gardener. “Sir,” she said, “if you have taken him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will go and get him.” [[#Verse 16.]] “Mary!” Jesus said. She turned to him and cried out, “Rabboni!” (which is Hebrew for “Teacher”). [[#Verse 17.]] “***Don’t cling to me***,” Jesus said, “for I haven’t yet ascended to the Father. But go find my brothers and tell them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’” [[#Verse 18.]] Mary Magdalene found the disciples and told them, “I have seen the Lord!” Then she gave them his message. #### Jesus Appears to His Disciples **Principle**: Our fear does not change God’s faithfulness. [[#Verse 19.]] That Sunday evening the disciples were meeting behind locked doors because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders. Suddenly, Jesus was standing there among them! “Peace be with you,” he said.  [[#Verse 20.]] As he spoke, he showed them the wounds in his hands and his side. They were filled with joy when they saw the Lord!  [[#Verse 21.]] Again he said, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I am sending you.” [[Matthew 28]] [[#Verse 22.]] Then he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. [[Acts 01]] [[#Verse 23.]] If you forgive anyone’s sins, they are forgiven. If you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.” #### Jesus Appears to Thomas **Principle**: Blessed are those who trust. [[#Verse 24.]] One of the twelve disciples, Thomas (nicknamed the Twin), was not with the others when Jesus came.  [[#Verse 25.]] They told him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he replied, “I won’t believe it unless I see the nail wounds in his hands, put my fingers into them, and place my hand into the wound in his side.” [[#Verse 26.]] Eight days later the disciples were together again, and this time Thomas was with them. The doors were locked; but suddenly, as before, Jesus was standing among them. “Peace be with you,” he said.  [[#Verse 27.]] Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and look at my hands. Put your hand into the wound in my side. Don’t be faithless any longer. Believe!” [[#Verse 28.]] “My Lord and my God!” Thomas exclaimed. [[#Verse 29.]] Then Jesus told him, “You believe because you have seen me. Blessed are those who believe without seeing me.” #### Purpose of the Book **Principle**: The purpose of the Gospel of John is that we have the evidence to believe. [[#Verse 30.]] The disciples saw Jesus do many other miraculous signs in addition to the ones recorded in this book.  [[#Verse 31.]] But these are written so that you may continue to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing in him you will have life by the power of his name. ## 📖 ==Verse-by-Verse Commentary== ###### Overall. ###### Verse 01. ###### Verse 02. ###### Verse 03. ###### Verse 04. ###### Verse 05. ###### Verse 06. ###### Verse 07. ###### Verse 08. ###### Verse 09. ###### Verse 10. ###### Verse 11. ###### Verse 12. ###### Verse 13. ###### Verse 14. ###### Verse 15. ###### Verse 16. ###### Verse 17. - The following link explains this statement, not as a warning, but as comfort. ([Why did Jesus tell Mary, “Do not cling to me” (John 20:17)? \| GotQuestions.org](https://www.gotquestions.org/do-not-cling-to-me.html)) Jesus was telling her He was not ascending to the Father yet. There was time. Don’t grab onto Him, go tell the disciples. This is another way of saying, “Don’t worry, Mary. I’m not leaving you. Go do what I say. I promise you can still trust Me.” Wow! ###### Verse 18. ###### Verse 19. ###### Verse 20. ###### Verse 21. ###### Verse 22. ###### Verse 23. - Jesus is not saying they have the power to forgive sins. He is saying they carry the message of salvation. Therefore, they carry the responsibility to share it with others. Those who hear the Gospel have the opportunity of salvation. Those who do not, are left in darkness. This would be like have antibiotics in a room full of sick people. The person dispensing the medicine does not have the power to heal. That is what the antibiotics do. They have the responsibility to give the medicine so that people can find healing. ###### Verse 24. - The reason Thomas had specific requests: - Nails - Many who were crucified were not nailed to the cross. The point of crucifixion was exposure to the elements. Therefore, seeing the nail wounds would prove it was Jesus. - Spear wound in His side- This was given to Jesus to make sure He was dead. Thomas is saying, “I want proof that He was indeed dead.” ###### Verse 25. ###### Verse 26. - It was the following Sunday. ###### Verse 27. ###### Verse 28. - Thomas was the first person after the Resurrection to declare Jesus as King and God. ###### Verse 29. - Jesus is not saying that those who do not see Him are MORE blessed. He is saying they are not less blessed. You do not have to see Jesus in order to believe. ###### Verse 30. ###### Verse 31. ## 🤔 Interesting Facts - coming soon ## 🧠 Chapter Summary - coming soon %%Write a short paragraph (3–5 sentences) summarizing what happens in this chapter. - What is the main event or teaching? - How does this chapter fit the book’s overall story? - What stands out immediately?
