Passage: [[James 03|James 3:17]] Level: Practical Theology Builds on: [[Proverbs Overview]] Date: 2026-10-11 Bible: Obsidian --- What is Godly wisdom? (James 3:17) ”Wisdom from above is first of all pure. It is also peace loving, gentle at all times, and willing to yield to others. It is full of mercy and the fruit of good deeds. It shows no favoritism and is always sincere.” According to **James 3:17, godly wisdom is wisdom that comes from God and reflects His character in how we think, speak, and treat others.** It involves both knowing what is right and living it with the right heart. James describes this wisdom through eight qualities: |Quality|What it means| |---|---| |**Pure**|It begins with sincere motives and a desire to honor God, free from deceit and selfish ambition.| |**Peaceable**|It seeks reconciliation and peace without compromising truth.| |**Gentle**|It treats people with consideration and restraint, even when correction is needed.| |**Open to reason**|It is willing to listen, receive correction, and be persuaded by what is true.| |**Full of mercy**|It responds compassionately to people’s weaknesses and failures.| |**Full of good fruits**|It produces practical acts of love, goodness, and obedience.| |**Impartial**|It acts fairly rather than allowing favoritism or personal advantage to determine its judgments.| |**Sincere**|It is honest and genuine, without hypocrisy or hidden agendas.| The surrounding passage contrasts this with “wisdom” driven by **bitter jealousy and selfish ambition**, which produces disorder (James 3:14–16). Godly wisdom produces righteousness through peacemaking (James 3:18). **A practical question:** _Does my response reflect truth, humility, compassion, and a desire for peace—or my desire to win?_ For teaching, you could summarize it this way: **“Godly wisdom is knowing how to do what is right in a way that reflects God’s heart.”**
